Lent
Are you giving up something for Lent?
I'm not Catholic, but still typically give up something.

If I did, I'd give up sugar. Glucose-fructose/high-fructose corn syrup, and adding sugar to my coffee. I would say cookies and such also, but I don't eat those anyway.
Maybe I will give it up. Why not?
Nope. Not me.
I went to Catholic school and it sucked when Lent would fall during the same time as my birthday, because SO many girls would give up chocolate and so I couldn't have a chocolate cake. :-(

I am not Catholic, and don't give anything up for lent.
Tisha, when I was in school my birthday always fell during Spring Break, so in elementary and middle school all my friends were on family vacation and I could never have a birthday party. So I feel for you!
I am Catholic, and I traditionally have given up alcohol for Lent. Obviously this year I've already given that up for nine months (along with caffeine!), so in theory I should choose something else.
The Church does not require pregnant women to give anything up, as we should be taking care of the baby with an appropriate diet. As well, I don't believe we have to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday or Fridays during Lent (although I can get protein from other sources, so I will probably still participate in that).
Does it make me a bad Catholic to not give anything up this year and take advantage of these rules? I think it might.
My best friend's husband gave up Facebook last year. I never go on Facebook, but perhaps I should give up something like that...

I'm thinking about giving up processed beverages: i.e. no soda, iced tea mixes, processed juices, etc.
I'd stick with water, fresh teas, coffee on occasion, milk (mostly to put in my coffee and tea), and wine... no mixed drinks or bottled mixers... which might be hard... and might really suck lol.
I haven't come up with anything this year. Maybe I should do that. Last year I gave up going out to eat! That was hard! I love going out to eat! For the most part I did well. This year I just (like 5 minutes ago) discovered that we booked our trip to Nashville (our honeymoon), just before Easter. Actually we return to NH on Easter. OOOPS! I didn't check the calendar! So not going out to eat isn't really an option.
I was going through RCIA last year so I was definatly more on top of everything. Sister Lucie told us that Lent isn't necessarily about giving things up. It is more about doing things that will bring you closer to God. So not going out to eat doesn't really fall under that! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! LOL!

Yeah, that's what we were always taught about Lent as well. I am a recovering Catholic,and I haven't practiced in a very, very long time. But back when I did, I always thought it was more about what you DID do, and not about what you didn't. My opinion was that God doesn't care if you stop eating chocolate for a few weeks, but he does care if you take some time to help others who are less fortunate, or stop being a right cow to everyone you meet.
Of course, I also refused to get ashes after I turned 14 because one of the readings on Ash Wednesday directed you to not behave like the hypocrites do, calling attention to yourself for piousness. I kind of saw putting ashes on your forehead to announce that you were a sinner as a similar thing. (But that also may give you some insight into why I'm no longer a practicing Catholic - my logic and the logic of the Catholic church don't always mesh.)

I was raised Roman Catholic and hated every moment of it. So for lent i'd typically give up drugs like crack or what not to make my mom mad hehe. Then I realized I can just give up Lent for Lent
The PP are right tho Lent isn't about giving something up its about showing your loyalty to god.
