vent about OB office...

Hi Ladies-

Thanks again for all the helpful info and OB recommendations. I think after this mornings visit at CW, I will be finding a different doctor/practice.

So...

I showed up at my 12 week appt, waited aprox. 20 mins then went in for u/s- which took awhile because she couldn't get profile shot of baby. The tech was very nice and explained that I would have to come back in a week for another ultrasound to see if they could get baby to move off the"back wall."  I then got dressed and went to wait for my consult with doctor, which I was looking forward to since I hadn't met her yet and had a few questions. Finally after 30 mins I was called in...by then, hubby was texting me that he had to get back to work...he was in car waiting with our 2 y/o. Nurse weighed me, took BP and asked the normal q's then said doc would be right in...i asked if we could wait to do pap/breast exam, etc until next week since hubby had to get back to work (it had been 1.5 hrs already). she said I could discuss this with doctor. I waited 5 more minutes then the nurse came back in to say that the doctor didn't need to see me today since there were no u/s results to discuss and that I was coming back next week. I was pretty offended that my doctor, whom I've never met couldn't take 2 mins to introduce herself and give me this info. I was so frustrated, I pretty much stormed out of there. I realize I'm emotional (hello pregnancy hormones!!), but here are my other concerns:

 1. I had a UTI at my last appt and they never checked urine after I finished antibiotics then told me they didn't need another sample until 16 weeks...

2. I have hypothyroidism and after my labs were drawn last appt, no one called to discuss lab work, or to inform me how often blood work would be done and if I should also be seeing endo regularly while pregnant (didn't have thryoid issues with 1st preg, so this is all knew...)

3. I am 13 weeks pregnant, a new pt at the office and have endo problems and had a UTI at first appt and have never seen or spoken with a doctor Confused

After appt, I went home and relaxed a bit then called OB office and luckily (for them) got a nice triage nurse on the phone...she was very understanding and apologetic and said the doctor would give me a call to answer my q's. In my opinion, too little, too late. I will be finding a new doctor. What are your thoughts??

 Thanks for listening/reading....

Re: vent about OB office...

  • So sorry to hear that your first appt with the new doctor went so poorly! I agree that it is a bit rediculous that your doctor couldn't take a couple of minutes out of their day to come introduce themselves to you and explain why you wouldn't be requiring any more tests/examinations during the appointment. I also find it strange that they didn't re-test your urine for a UTI, but I'm no medical expert. I think you are right to listen to your gut instinct and find another doctor if you are dissatisfied with your treatment. Do you have another practice in mind that you would like to switch to?

  • I think if you're not happy with the office then you should find another practice.  You're going to be seeing a lot of these people in the next several months.

I don't think it's odd that they didn't re-test your urine after a course of antibiotics.  Unless you were still having symptoms, there is no reason to believe that the antibiotics didn't do their job.  I've had many UTIs both pregnant and non-pregnant and it's not standard to re-test if you're asymptomatic.

  • Mainely Foolish: thanks for the info. In my case, I was never symptomatic so I wasn't sure what the protocol was...should have probably just called the office to make sure. Definitely won't wait next time...as it turns out, doc called and she wants me to come back for a quick urine specimen. Feeling great though, so I'm not worried :)

I've never had an asymptomatic UTI -- when I get them I'm miserable!

I'm glad you got it all straightened out.  :)

I agree with all of this.  However, I have to give a urine sample at every single prenatal visit.   I'd be annoyed that I had to wait that long, and would be looking elsewhere for the rest of my care - and I don't have the issues that you've had.

I'm not sure what you are looking for in your care, or if your health issues make you "high risk", but I love the midwives I see.  I can't recommend anyone specifically, since I'm out of state, but I LOVE the attention and care I get from seeing midwives over an OB.  My appointments are all quick, but I have the freedom (and am encouraged) to ask ANY and ALL questions at every visit.

I'm not sure I understand why a profile shot of the baby was the deal-breaker either... I'd think a heartbeat would be the most important part at an early ultrasound.

In a first trimester screening, you need a profile shot to measure the nuchal translucency (NT) -- a large space in the neck fold can be an indicator of Down Syndrome.  You can only get a useful measurement at approximately 12 to 13 weeks gestation.

  • I was told by the nurse at my 8-9 week u/s that I would give a urine sample every visit, which after finding out I had an asymptomatic UTI made me feel better. Then yesterday, the triage nurse I spoke with over the phone said they changed this policy due to cost reasons...blah blah blah....studies showed it was unnecessary and urine samples only needeed to be done at specific times throughout pregnancy....

nurse also said my OB would be calling to answer my q's and likely apologize about the "mis-understanding" yesterday....finally got around to checking my voicemail this morning and....shocker....it was another nurse calling with the answers. it's official, finding a new OB this week....

  • That sucks that you are having such difficulty. Definitely move on if you feel uncomfortable. I was at CW and they did a urine test every visit, but I'm proof that having one every time wont help since those tests never showed I had pre-e. Even at MMC when they did the daily tests it didn't show up. Wasn't until I did the 24hr test that it was blazingly clear. I hope this OB isn't one of the few I like there since I plan on going back there for #2! I never had a problem with my Dr's calling me though.

Goodluck! You gotta go with your gut, it's a long journey and you want to be comfortable.

Oh, right...  I had to go to a specialist for mine, that's why I didn't realize it was  what they're looking for at the regular OB's office.
