Recommend your cheap flat iron

Do you have a cheap/knock-off flat iron that does an amazing job?  I need one for really light duty straightening.  I know I need ceramic, but if you have a brand/size you love, please recommend.  I can't tell the difference between them all at Sally/Target (if there truly is any difference).

FTR, I have straight hair so I don't need a Chi-quality flat iron and there's no way I'm spending that kind of money on one.

Re: Recommend your cheap flat iron

  • I wouldn't recommend cheap....the quality is going to impact how much it damages your hair, not how straight it gets it. Mine was $100 and worth every penny....they last forever too. I had my chi for 6 yrs and only got a new one to upgrade.

  • I got mine for $60 at bed bath and beyond.  I really like it, when I use it that is.  I believe it is a vidal.  It has the ceramic plates on it, which is much better for your hair than the metal plates.  I had a hard time paying 60 for it but it was worth it.
  • Realistically, I'm looking to use it once every two weeks or so for a short period of time.  I had a lot of hair loss when DD was born/breastfeeding, and I have a lot of new growth right now that is creating a fuzz bucket about mid-way through my hair.  I'm just looking for a short-term finishing tool to use for going out/date night/special work functions.  I can control the fuzz most times with a brush and blow dryer, so I would be more worried about blow-dryer damage than iron damage, you know?  Not that those two can't piggyback each other and really eff me over.  Really, what I need is something cheap and reliable to get me past this mass new-growth grow-out awkward stage.

  • For Christmas, I bought my SIL a Babyliss iron, which is the same brand one of my close friends who is a hair stylist uses on her clients, and I found it at TJMaxx for $29.99.

  • Yep, def go to TJMaxx, I got a chi curling iron for 20 there.  There were flat irons for the same price but I already have one.  It will last forever so I didn't even take the awesome deal.  I should have, I could have sold it to you :)

This. I love my CHI, I especially love that it heats up in like 10 secs.

  • My sister got mine at Sally's.  It's a knock off of the Chi, but I love it.  It's called Generic Value Products (I believe).
  • This might just be due to my crazy hair, but I have a $18 large-barrel curling iron from Target that straightens my hair better than my CHI flat iron. It doesn't make sense!! If TJMaxx is a no-go on the flat irons, it may be worth a look.
