Another Poop Post

TMI, but it's a poop post, so what do you except :P

For the past three days, DD has been straining a ton when she poos. It makes DH and I crack up laughing. But today, at lunch she strained a bunch and was not sucessful. Then, in the afternoon, she started straining and managed to get a turd out - she usually has PB poo, so I'm not sure if she's not used to this type of poo or if she is constipated. I changed her diaper immediately but her bum was all red in the area that was in contact. I put some cream on and the redness was gone at the next diaper change. Then, tonight she started straining again, pooped, and then started crying, so it must have hurt. Again, it was more solid and she had a bit of a rash.

So, my question is, is this constipation? If so, does anyone have any tips to help her? I gave her prunes for the first time tonight and she ate about two teaspoons. I've never dealt with this before, so I'm not sure what to do, and most of the info in my baby book (Baby 411) is either geared towards newborns or is stuff we already do (like feeding her fiber and lots of water). Also, does anyone know what is up with the instant rash?

  • Caroline gets insta mini rash after some poops. Once I bathe her it's gone. I used to think it was me slowly switching her to reg. Formula but now I think it's just a combination of foods, etc. Most dr's say apples/pears/ prunes so see if that works. If she seems in distress or you get worried call her Dr. Has she eaten more solids for you lately?

She has been eating a bit more of the same stuff (cheerios, multigrain cereal, puffs, etc.)

  • If it gets really bad, you can cut a child's suppository in half and use that.

Helen once had rock hard pebble poop that was impacted.  I can't remember how old she was -- around a year, I think.  I helped her clear it out and she hasn't ever been that constipated since.  I have no idea what caused the initial backup.

  • Unfortunately, Felix gets constipated often and that's exactly what his poops are like, minus the rash. he also doesn't cry, he just strains a ton. The only thing that seems to help is giving him a mixture of 1/3 juice & 2/3 water each day. We also stopped giving him rice cereal and have him eating oatmeal in the morning. This week had been especially bad, and the pedi said if the changes (above) didn't help we would move on to a suppository.

  • That's rough to go through! I always gave Leah 4 ounces of plain apple juice and it worked every time!
  • I've never had to do this but my Dr told me if Caroline ever got constipated I could also stick just a little bit of Vaseline on a rectal thermometer. Helps loosen things up a bit. maybe the extra grains are just taking some time to move thru hr

I saw that in Baby 411 and tried it last night. It was after she pooped, though, so she may have not needed it at that point. There was a bit more in her diaper this morning, though.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am going to keep trying to feed her prunes (of course, her favorite fruit is banana, which is constipating) and/or apples, and I'll also try the apple juice if that doesn't work.

  • That happened to us when we first started Nolan on cereal, and he still has issues.   We stopped rice completely.  You might want to see if that multigrain cereal still has the rice in it.  We had to switch to oatmeal.  Also, Nolan gets prunes at every meal and a tablespoon of prune juice in every bottle.  Apples are actually binding for some - remember, it's a part of the B.R.A.T. diet when you have diarrhea.  Luckily, Nolan LOVES prunes.   :)   Nolan always gets the redness after a very hard poop from all the straining, but it goes away with a little ointment.  Sometimes a warm bath helps if he's having a really hard time.  The pedi told us to only use the thermometer trick in dire straits.  It apparently teaches the sphincter muscle to rely on manipulation.  She said as long as he is straining and trying to pass the poop, don't use it.  If he stops trying, then use it.  We also do 4 oz. of water a day.   All that, and he still has really hard poops.  Poor kids!  Good luck!  Hope you find something that works!
