My husband and I were discussing this kid last night.
He doesn't think that they should throw the kid off the team- maybe just suspend him for a few games and move on. He says that BYU has the potential to be a Final 4 Team and that by throwing this kid off for a mistake jeopardizes what the entire squad has worked hard for.
I think they had reason to do it- he knew the rules and he broke them. Kirk was involved in the athletics department of our university that had similar rules and if he/ we had been caught for many of the same things he would have faced similar consequences and we both could have been expelled. Plus, he opted to go to BYU instead of other schools (he was apparently heavily recruited), so it wasn't a go to BYU or don't go to college type of situation where he accepted the constraints because he had no other choices and wanted the education.
WDYT?

Ditto Riss.
They were talking about this on P&CE, apparently caffeine is in their honor code as off limits too. Talk about rough and tough college days.

Caffeine?! I could have done without sex but I never would have graduated without coffee. Holy crap!
Keep in mind, though, that most of the things in the honor code are also very basic to the Mormon religion, so in theory, they are things that a good Mormon should avoid anyway, regardless of school affiliation. So on that hand, I guess it's good they kept to the honor code and disciplined them as they saw fit.
But on the other (non-religious) hand, I think it's a little extreme to dismiss a college-aged man for having sex with his girlfriend. I mean, basketball players saw a lot of action where I went to school. Heh.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
Sucks for the team and the player, but rules are rules.
All I could think when I read the honor code was that I pretty much broke every one of those while I was in college.....
Caffeine is actually considered a stimulant and recommended by all NCAA D1 athletes to stay away from... since they drug test on a regular basis, they tell them to avoid it altogether so it wont show up for further testing. My sis is a D1 Track runner and they arent allowed to do most of the Vitamin waters or caffeine because of the things that could show up.
