s/o weddings: Wedding dresses at Costco? WDYT?

Article about it here: http://radioalice.radio.com/2011/03/03/costco-wedding-dresses/

But here's what it says:

"When you?re shopping for a wedding dress, there?s about to be a new option . . . one far, far away from the overpriced boutique bridal shops.  In fact, this one?s set up at the same place you buy 96 packs of soap and giant tubs of mayonnaise.

?Costco is getting into the wedding dress game.

?Costco just announced a partnership with a wedding dress designer named Kirstie Kelly.  She?s making six exclusive dress designs that will sell at Costco . . . for much cheaper than her dresses sell elsewhere.

?Kelly?s designs normally run up to $4,000 . . . the six Costco dresses will range in price from $600 to $1.399.

?They?ll be available in sizes two to 24.

?And even though they?re less expensive than most wedding dresses, Kelly says they?re still going to maintain her strong commitment to quality . . . with luxury fabrics and embellishments like lace, crystals, and pearls.

?Costco will start selling the dresses through special bridal events.  You can go to Costco.com to see if and when they?re going to hold one in your area, and even make an appointment."

So WDYT?  Would you have bought your wedding dress at Costco if you had the opportunity?

Re: s/o weddings: Wedding dresses at Costco? WDYT?

  • Absolutely I would have bought my dress off the back of a truck if it had looked great on me!

Oh, and I tried to buy my flowers through costco but found a great local florist who did my arrangements for less than costco and I got much more what I wanted.

  • if i loved it .. it wouldn't matter WHERE it came from costco, david's or some high end bridal salon.

  • If I loved a dress they carried, I would buy it from Costco. I have found some good deals on Calvin Klein and Lucky Jeans from Costco, so why not a wedding dress.

  • Probably not. I knew what I wanted and the only way for me to get it in my budget was to have it made. It was also important to me to use good materials and get a dress that was made locally, and that's what I got for only a little more than what Costco is charging here (including my veil and all the alterations).

    Without a doubt!

  • I saw this on the news a week or so ago up here. Why not...if it the dress you like and the price is within your budget, sure. That being said...I don't know if I would have. I'm a big...think it over kind of gal and with a trunk show/sample sale type of thing you need to buy it on the spot. I do think it is a great option for those with a budget and a big time, time crunch. A friend of mine planned her wedding in three months and had to buy a sample dress and start alterations on the spot for it to get done in time. If I'd buy a car, my rx glasses and my mini-blinds from costco, why not a wedding dress, lol.

  • Sure I would have looked there. MIL has a card (we don't) so she probably would have asked if I wanted to go. My dress was the minimum amount that these Kelly dresses will be anyway. I got it in a small boutique and it was very unique looking so I'm sure I would have still gone there and gotten that dress.
  • Sure, if I loved the dress.  How is this that much different than buying a designer dress you love from Pearl's Place or another online retailer?  I mean, for those, you are selecting a style, etc that you love and then placing the order.  But, how is the "where" it comes from all that important if we can get so many dresses from online warehouses?  I don't see the big deal.  I bet they're still high quality dresses.  Costco sells very high end and high quality products.

ETA: and unlike Ryn, I'm an on-the-spot buyer.  I bought the second dress I tried on, the first day I went dress shopping.  My only "regret" has ever been that I didn't buy the first dress I tried on ;)

me too! I don't care if it is from Costco but if it was within my budget and it fit me, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I wish they had this available during my WP days. It might have been less stress on me finding a wedding dress within my (small) budget.

Your dress was stunning, and totally perfect for you though.  I'm glad you thought it over and picked that one :)

do they have fitting rooms at Costco? I have purchased clothes there, but never tried anything on--I feel like a wedding dress is definitely something you'd want to try on before purchasing...

Maybe the KK gowns are available at regular retailers and you can try it on there and then go purchase at Costco?

  • Ummmm... Call me snobby if you want, but I'm not sure if I would. If there are only 6 dresses in the line, it seems like "everyone" might be wearing the same dress that season. I know that's a risk with any dress, but it seems that might be heightened with a Costco line more than others....

In the news of new bridal lines... I'm LOVING the new Anthropologie bridal line. More my style. :)

  •  Wow. My wedding gown cost LESS than the cheapest Costco dress.

That somehow feels kind of insulting. Lol! Mine was $550. But, dammit, I thought it was pretty! :P

I see your point esp if they are only 6 styles.

MHO Anthropolgie is not my style and I think there stuff is waaayyy expensive.

it reminds me of the maggie sottero craze a few years back and brides actually bonded over having the same maggie dress. this i'm sure would be no different. besides in this day and age, it'd almost be a badge of honor to have a costco dress as your wedding dress :P

fwiw - my mom's ering came from costco Surprise same, if not better quality, diamond than anything you could find in a jewelry store.

  • I would assume the roadshow would bring fitting rooms and everything because you still have to have appointments.

I doubt "everyone" will have your dress because they're only being sold through roadshows and there aren't going to be very many of them.  Probably more likelyhood of 'everyone' having your Maggie dress and certainly more likelyhood of 'everyone' having your David's dress.  That being said, I was the only one at my wedding in a wedding gown, so I wasn't worried about it.  Big Smile

  • Ha. I don't think I could afford an Anthro dress... But I sure love 'em!

Yes, there was the Maggie craze for sure!

I think my bias is that I grew up in the wedding industry. I've seen one too many wedding dresses in my lifetime. :)

    I agree with the bolded!

I posted in FB when I saw the wedding dresses at Costco a couple of weeks ago. They were really gorgeous! They did have a whole set up in the middle of Costco. They had dresses displayed, fitting rooms, and ladies there to help with questions and trying stuff on. There were seriously some beautiful dresses there. I didn't see anyone trying it on, but I just glanced over real quick and took a crappy picture lol)

I'm not sure if I would buy a dress from costco. I'm plus sized, so I did a lot of online research before I went in to try dresses on. I think I totally would have looked online to see what Costco had without any qualms. But I absolutely knew that my dress was the one for me when I saw it online(I just wish I had little sleeves added to it... but that's a different story) and went in and bought it. And my dress was $500, so it was a great deal. I wouldn't automatically buy a dress from Costco, and I wouldn't rule it out because it's from Costco. I would have included it in my research.

I was thinking the same exact thing. That if you had any friends or people were going to several weddings in a season the chance for repeat would be very high.

See, I really doubt that.  How would the chance for repeat be any higher than without?  The cost of the Costco dress is not significantly lower than the cost of dresses in a bridal shop.  My dress was $800 and I loved, but decided not to buy (b/c of price) a $1200 dress.  Brides buy a dress they love generally.  What are the chances two people in the same season who had the same mutual friends (friends enough to be at both weddings) would choose, love, and purchase from Costco the same dress?  It's just 6 MORE options out there in the bridal dress world.  Not the only 6 to choose from period.  Or the 6 BEST DEAL EVER dresses on the planet.  I don't think there's any higher chance of repeat whatsoever.  In fact, with only 6 options, and a lowest price of $600, I bet they would sell very few, but give 6 more options to brides out there looking for "the one."

  • Sure I'd buy from them if I liked it. They sell engagement rings that I hear are pretty high quality diamonds. The wedding industry is so ridiculously overpriced I'd welcome lower-priced options.

Well, actually, I'd prefer to buy local, so I'd do that first. And it doesn't sound like Costco offers petites, so that would rule me out. And like Stef said, the Costco prices aren't that cheap. I bought my dress in that range from an independent retailer.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.
