My position has been cut...

They're eliminating the ESL teachers in my district first.  Was told today my position will not be there next year and my name is on the list and will be cut.

I will be looking for other teaching positions and I'm also going to go ahead and get my science certification as well.

It really sucks that the kids are suffering :(  I was fine when they told me, but when I saw my students, I lost it.  I love teaching so much.

  • I'm so sorry! I hope you find a new position! I can't believe they're cutting ESL!

  • I'm so sorry. I hate that teachers are suffering because y'all have the most important job.
  • I'm so sorry to hear this.  Are you okay?  Honestly, I'm very surprised to hear that ESL was first to go.  I figured that was one of the positions that was pretty safe.

If you feel like venting a little more, just let me know.  If you want to email me at nest.jess.o @ gmail.  feel free to do so.  I'm willing to listen if you need it.

  • I'm so sorry!  I have several friends that are in your position and I know they are really struggling right now.

Have they given you any hope that they can re-position you??  Good luck!

ESL is the first to go across a lot of districts.  It's the smallest "special needs" group, and (I know this is horrible) but I know they're thinking parents of foreigners are less likely to complain.  I hate this, these kids are so special, and they deserve to be given the best!  I'm the only math/ESL teacher in the entire district.

    Boo.  Again, I'm so sorry!

  • i'm so sorry.  i've heard that we are supposed to be finding out next friday whether we will be getting a contract for next year.  i think i'm safe, but i'm in an area that is always considered (fine arts).  this is the first year, though, that i've felt that my job might actually be in danger.  we've been told that the district will do its best to reposition us if our program is cut, so i hope that is true for whoever loses his or her position.  we keep being told to keep a smile on for the kids, but i have a feeling that's going to be next to impossible come next friday.

That is so crazy to me that they cut ESL.  And a math teacher at that!  I'm so, so sorry :(

  • Boo!!! I'm so sorry to hear this. Its so sad that teachers have to worry about their jobs and are also losing their jobs. Its one of (if not the most) the most important jobs out there. Good luck in the next stages of your career. Hopefully this will just end up bringing a better opportunity to you.

Just a thought (although I have no clue how you would do it) is there a way you could possibly start some sort of non-profit to offer ESL classes outside of the schools? I have no clue how all of that would work as far as funding and such, but I know that there has to be a huge market for it.

  • I am so sorry! This is happening to so many people right now. I really hope that you are able to find something else soon.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. It is such a shame that our teachers are not being valued the way that they should be.

  • I don't know if you've thought or asked about this yet but I've been wondering.  Will you be able to draw unemployment?  Hopefully you will so that will help until you find something else. :(

Oh, another great story about that...

When the guy told me (5 minutes before my first class of the day) he said they're encouraging people to write resignation letters because it looks better for you if that happens.  BS!  If we resign, we don't get unemployment.  The district is encouraging us to resign instead of being laid off so they don't have to pay unemployment.  You better believe I WILL NOT resign, if they want me to leave I will claim unemployment.  It just shows the district doesn't care about the employees as much as they say they do.

i've been reading the texas teachers chat board at teachers.net, and some people are saying that you can't start collecting unemployment until you stop being paid, which is usually -- at least for me -- the end of august since the 10 month contract payment is spread out over 12 months.  i have no idea if this is true, but just something to check on.  some of them mentioned requesting the remainder of your salary in one lump sum so unemployment could be collected right away, but again, i don't know.

my dh told me at lunch that his dept. is called together for an "emergency mtg." at 3:30.  on a friday.  can't be good.  (he also works for the school district, so we're facing double possibility of RIF.)   :(

  • I hate this for you, and for all of the others going through similar things. Lots of luck for whatever your future holds!

I would check with the Texas Workforce Commission about the unemployment issue.  There actually are a few reasons for resigning that still qualify you for unemployment, one of them being your scheduled hours "changing" (forcing you to move to a night shift, for example), making it impossible for you to continue to work there.  I don't know exactly how this applies in your situation, but it's worth checking into.  I had an employee quit last year and file for unemployment - I fought it, and just assumed that I would win since she QUIT.  I did end up winning it, but the hearing officer is the one that told me about that loophole.  So I would look into it, just in case.  It's frustrating to deal with the state, but it might be worth it for you.  Good luck!

  • I am so so sorry. Teaching used to be a profession where you were guaranteed to get a job. Scary and sad that it's not that way anymore. I worry about what will happen when this generation grows up... Indifferent
  • Yeah, generally being forced to quit still qualifies you for unemployment, so resigning when they cut your hours to 0 may still qualify you. Is your district offering incentive pay for resigning? Incentive pay may screw up your unemployment. I'd definitely talk to someone with TWC or a labor lawyer on the specifics so you can the most out of the situation.

Do you mind me asking what district you work for?  I work for LISD and I've heard they will be addressing teaching positions in the middle of April...I've heard they will be cutting probationary teachers first, which is what I am...nice.

I'm in PISD.  We weren't suppose to find out til the end of the month, but the Principal over my grade is going to be gone for  a couple weeks so decided to tell me now.  I still haven't received anything in writing though, which I find odd.

  • I am really sorry! I know first hand how hard it is to lose ones job. I am sure you must be tired of hearing this, but look at the bright side, you still have plenty of time to plan what comes next.  I was out of job for a year and few months, things do get better, it was definitly a humbling experience, but things turn around. Just stay positive.
