s/o nn question

On my resume I have my full name, first and last.  I was wondering what you all would think if you received a resume with a NN at the top instead of the full name.  Brit vs. Brittany.

Thoughts?

Re: s/o nn question

  • I think I would assume your name was Brit.  I can't say it would bother me, since I like to know what people prefer to be called.  I think Tim has his full name on his resume (Timothy) even though NO ONE calls him that (except me when he's frustrating me).

I do think the professional thing is to include your full name though, especially because for background info, etc, everything like SSA info is in your full name.

  • Hmm, I don't know that it would really matter. DH has Charles on his resume, but then has his email address which has his name as Chase (which is what he goes by). When he interviewed for his current job his boss just asked him which one he prefers. It wasn't an issue.
  • I think the full name should go on the resume.

  • I think full name for resume, then introduce your preference at the interview or once you start the job.

Although even if you put the nickname, people may still assume it is short for something; I work with a Beth, and people call her Elizabeth, even though her given name is Beth.

  • I always put my full name. Andy on the other hand puts Andy down instead of his full name Andrew. Even with the bank and credit companies he has Andy bc he has never gone my Andrew. I look at Allison as my name and Allie as a nickname but I look at Andy as his name and not a nickname (I hope that makes as much sense as it does in myhead:) )

  • Unless it is a legal name that sounds like a nickname, I think it would appear unprofessional to put a nickname at the top.

    i agree.

NO ONE calls Chris Christine except her parents. It is on her resume. and her work email for that matter.

  • I think it would be more professional to use your full name rather than a nickname.  Once you are hired then go for the nickname.
