Wine?

Ok Im planning on popping my wine cherry this weekend because I feel like a durdadur...any suggestions from my winos?

Re: Wine?

  • I'm not a wino. I like sweet wine though. And I could drink a bottle of Moscato everyday. My favorite "brand" is Woodbridge, but Barefoot and Sutter are fine. (And that shiz is mad cheap yo)

  • Here's my big tip.  I swear by it.

Especially since it's your first time, don't worry too much about varietal (the grape) or the vineyard.

Maybe start with a white instead of a red.  Most people take to whites easier, reds are more robust.  Most people start drinking white then drink red when their palates adjust.

Here's my big tip.  Drink your wine with FOOD.

Pick your wine, then figure out what to pair it with.  There are tons of guides online.  Wine enhances the flavour of food and vice versa.

So take a bite of some cheese and sip some wine and have them together.

Or get a juicy steak and eat it with some red wine.

    I promise, it's soooooo good.

  • I agree with alicia:Especially since it's your first time, don't worry too much about varietal (the grape) or the vineyard.Maybe start with a white instead of a red.  Most people take to whites easier, but red are better.  Most people start drinking white then drink red when their palates adjust. most people who try wine for the first few times (years?) like white better because it is sweeter.  i rarely drink white wine and prefer a bold dry red instead.  however, when i first started drinking wines, i only drank white Rieslings because they were the sweetest (my favorite was Trimbach)   might be your best bet!  have fun, im proud of you!
  • I have to agree, start with a white.  I prefer white (actually sparkling) to a red.  Richard loves his red and ocassionally I'll help him polish off a bottle.  You can try a blush too because it's pretty, pink and easy to drink.  Ha, that rhymed.

A few glasses will get you a little tipsy so be careful.

  • I agree: white before red. I used to drink only white (many moons ago) now I pretty much drink only red.

Are you a sugary alcohol drinker? If so go with a sweeter wine. If not stick to something a bit more dry. I'd get a bottle of both pinot grigio (dryer) or a riesling (sweeter) in case you don't like one.

I am also a student at the wine doesn't have to be expensive to be passably good school.

If you did want to go right for a red, I'd ease in with a pinot noir.

I don't often pair my food with wine if I'm just drinking some wine and not out at a restaurant.

  • That's true deb...becareful jessie.

Don't think you can knock back wine like beer.  A lot of people get wasted faster off of wine than beer. And you don't want to end up with a wine hangover the first time you drink it.  They suck.

  • I'd say to try a Reisling. I didn't like wine until then. If you can find a Chateau St. Michelle or Dr. Loosen bottle, I'd get one of those. To me, they're the perfect amount of sweetness and they're both less than $15 per bottle.

I agree that you definitely need to eat something with it, even if you just do cheese and crackers.

If you find out that the wine is still too dry, you could always try a dessert or ice wine which is really sweet (think champagne like) and slowly work your way down from there.

I don't drink wine and this is the reason why. I can drink beer like its going out of style and not get too tipsy. Wine I have like 2 glasses and I feel like I'm 16 getting drunk off of mike lemonaide.

  • Now Im all nervous about it lol. I absolutely hate champagne and love my beer and captain. I will try a white and see what happens thanks ladies!
  • oooh i love captain.  havent had it in many moons.

and my problem with wine is that i DO drink it like beer.  i will get a good, fancy bottle of red, and i pour myself a fishbowl sized glass, and after 3 glasses (and only an hour or 2 later??!) it is gone!  whoops.

  • Is it awful I started to like wine thanks to Arbormist? Hahaha. But I definitely agree to start with white - a riesling or White Zinfandel is probably your best bet because they're very light.

This post totally makes me want to pop open a bottle tonight.. and now I will.. thanks!

I drink EVERYTHING like we're currently experiencing a drought. Dinner at Red Robin? Five sodas, no problem. Watching Grey's? Bottle of wine, down the hatch. Out dancing? 6 rum and cokes in an hour. Hiking? 3 water bottles emptied on a 2 mile hike.

This is also probably why I have to pee all the time.
