Moms and Moms to be

On Monday I have a male Respiratory student with me in the NICU. I believe he is going to be with me 7am-3pm. Problem is as of yesterday there were 3 babies in the NICU and only 1 is respiratory related. I'm trying to think ahead of things I can do with this guy for 8hrs when we only have 1 baby to take care of. I was thinking about taking him to a delivery if we have any to go to depending which practitioner is on that day. I just wanted to know from your prospective how you would feel about it? To be fair this is a teaching institution and there are a handful of male nursing students that do go through their L&D rotation at our hospital. Ill also have to feel him out and see if its even something he is interested in doing.

Re: Moms and Moms to be

  • Who is his supervisor? (Do they even do that, who does he report to?) It is what it is... Get him involved doing something else since it's also part of that position. I hate doing Practicums for that exact reason.. Nothing to do. Waste of time. There and not learning. Drives me bananas.

  • This Resp program doesn't really have on site clinical instructors. They basically beg local hospitals to let there student follow their staff around. Its the same program I went through so I know how it is to be one of those student no one wants to deal with. I volunteered to be in the NICU with him Monday so he'd hopefully have a good experience.

  • You can only do so much.. I'm sure he'll appreciate you spending any time with him.

  • I personally wouldn't mind. I had a male med-student observe my c-section with Aidan and it didn't bother me at all.

  • Yeah if I take him to anything it will probably be a section b/c we attend all sections.

    First I think it's cool that you're trying to do that for him.  Instead of just being like, "well that's how MY experience was - it is what it is - sorry you're bored, bring a book with you" kind of attitude.  The day will go much faster for you both and at least he might learn something.  hah.

    To answer your question - it wouldn't bother me as a patient.  I had two residents coming in and out while my doc was on her way.  I didn't mind.  I only minded when the one assshole male doc checked me and told me I wasn't even close to ready to push, when the nurse who had been checking me all night said I was, the female resident said I was, AND my doc who walked in two seconds later told me I was.  I was ready to kick him in his stupid face.  lol  Uh not to mention I effin KNEW it was time.  OMG... seriously.  lol

    I hate stupid residents!! I know they have to learn too but I swear there are some that I wouldn't let touch me. Like how did they graduate med school???? My favorite residents are the ones who come to me and say "I dont understand how this ventilator mode works. Can you explain it to me?" Yes, I can b/c even though you are a MD I am an RCP (respiratory car practitioner) and I know ventilators inside and out. I'd love to share my knowledge with you so that you continue to respect me in the future!

    ::Steps off soapbox::

    I worked with some awesome residents yesterday and even though I was getting my butt kicked I took the time to go over the vent modes when they asked.

  • I wouldn't mind at all.

    Granted I did not end up doing a vaginal but even the time while they were inducing me I had to get up to go to the bathroom so much my butt was exposed and they go right in to check to see how dilated you are...

    the girl had to shave me and I was like la la la haha

    and I'm sure once you get to pushing you could care less other than to get that baby out.

    I wouldn't mind a c-section either.

    They did have a nursing student come afterwards when they had to check to make sure my ute was going down (which hurts like a mofo y'all) and so I said I didn't mind even though I did just because the nurse had to do it and then she had to do it and that was too much pain haha
