QOTD: Thursday

What is the farthest from home you've ever gone on an impromptu road trip? When was it? What did you do? Who were you with?

Re: QOTD: Thursday

  • I've never really done an impromptu road trip. The longest trip I've made on my own is the one from Clemson to Jax (6.5 - 7.5 hours) but I always drive it straight through.

  • Just spur of the moment? Savannah. When DH and I were dating, he locked himself out of his house. We were going to call a locksmith, but decided to just drive to Savannah and get the spare key from his parents.

  • DH and I have made a few impromtu road trips to Savannah. We usually just walk around and have some drinks on the river. We have also done the night time ghost tours which is fun.

  • In May 2009, JJ was the Graduate Assistant who worked with the IU Baseball team. I went to almost all the games through the season, and they were doing really well. The last weekend of the season, they had the Big 10 Tournament in Columbus, OH. I wanted to go, but it was 3 days long and I couldn't take off work and afford a hotel for 3 days.

When I found out they made it to the Championship game on Saturday night, Friday after work I called him and told him I wanted to go. So on Saturday morning I got in my car, drove to Cincinnati, dropped Pumpkin off at my parents, then went on to Columbus, watched the game (they won! JJ got a championship ring) and then stayed the night in the team's hotel.

Sunday morning we had breakfast with the team and then he skipped the team bus, drove back with me to Cincinnati to get Pumpkin and eat lunch at my parents house, and then we went back to Bloomington. It was a 6 hour trip each way. Totally last minute, but worth every second. It was amazing to see them win!

ETA: Here's my blog post about it, it was a really big deal for us :) http://www.veggiebyseason.com/2009/05/iu-baseball-big-10-champions.html

  • I'm not big on impromptu road trips but I did drive to Panama City one time as a wingman for my BFF for a booty call. It was really shady and an overnight trip where I tried to actually work the next day.

  • Oh man! I've had several, that were all around the 6-7 hour range.

Farthest that were completely spontaneous, there are 2:  In college, during the 04 hurricane season, I had a friend call me one night saying there was a mandatory evacuation of his dorm. He suggested we drive up to Rome, GA (N of Atlanta) for the weekend to visit a friend. It was like 10 at night, but I quickly made arrangements for my missed classes the next day, threw some stuff in a bag, and we drove overnight! The drive kind of sucked, but we had a great time hanging out with our friend.

Also: A few years later, I was camping on the beach with a big group. We (this is DH and I now) got a phone call Saturday morning from a friend saying he had 2 extra tickets for the basketball national championship in Atlanta. No hesitation, we packed up our tent, jumped in the car and started driving. We got to the arena just minutes before the second final four game started, which luckily was the one the Gators were in. They won, so we came back the next night for the championship which they won too!

Farthest with less than 24 hours notice: I went to Charleston one weekend with DH and 2 friends completely on a whim. We had a 3 day weekend coming up, and just kind said, hey let's go somewhere. We picked Charleston, booked a hotel room on priceline, and took off the next morning. Even though we had nothing planned, it turned out to be a great trip.

Farthest in general (with lots of planning): After college graduation I drove with my best friend from Florida to San Francisco. She was moving there so after the drive I flew home. We took about a week to make the drive and got to see a lot of neat stuff along the way.

  • When I was 21 my bf's grandmother died. At the last second we decided to go to the funeral in Orlando and make a short trip of it. I asked the assistant director if I could have Friday off and she said sure. We drove Thursday night to Orlando, went to the funeral Friday, then spent all day Saturday at Disney. When I called Sunday to get the schedule for my work week my director informed me that I should not come back to work and I should've never taken Friday off even though the assistant director said I could. I've never taken an impromptu trip since! Lol

  • I'm a big planner so the most spontaneous my life gets is when we decide to go out to dinner instead of cooking that night.

Also I hate road trips.  I'd rather fly and spend more time at the actual location than getting there.

  • I haven't been on a good road trip in a while. This thread has me itching for one!

Longest spontaneous road trip is a tie between two road trips my BFF and I went on while living in southern Arizona (we could see the Mexican border). One was to Area 51 and we stopped in Las Vegas on the way. The other was to the Grand Canyon and we stopped in Winslow, AZ and hung out on Route 66. Both trips were completely spontaneous and were 12+ hours one way each. Less notably, another time we drove 2 hours round trip to Tucson for the sole purpose of eating at Waffle House. Ah, to be 18 and have lots of 4 day weekends with nothing to do!

Then of course there is the road trip DH proposed on. It was fairly spontaneous considering we both quit our jobs. Most of you already know this story but here is a quick recap. I suggested the idea in February, and by April we were on the road. We live in DH's two door coupe for two months and drove to California and back, with tons of stops along the way.

This is the cheapest gas we saw on the entire road trip. I'm so sad that prices are right back where they were three years ago, but I guess at least we've had a break for that time?

  • Aaaand I thought of another one. Same BFF as above was living in Virginia and I was visiting family in FL while living in Japan. On Christmas Eve one year we decided it would be cool to hang out for a few weeks. Her and her hubby left within the hour to come pick me up in FL, and we drove back to VA together. I changed my flight so I'd fly out of VA instead of FL. That one was over 14 hours!

I love this! This is a perfect example of something I would totally do/have wanted to do & I would NEVER be able to talk DH into. Good for you guys!

  • I'm a planner too, so spontaneous road trips don't really happen. I hate being in the car for extended periods of time.

In college, my dumbass boyfriend was selling books for the summer up in TN. In our young love, we realized we missed each other JUST SO FREAKIN' MUCH & we met in the middle & spent the night. Yeah. I broke up with him not too long after that.

Also I made a random drive to Jax & spent the weekend with DH when he'd first moved to Melbourne & I hadn't moved yet. Oh the things we do for love Wink

  • My DH also isn't spontaneous at all. I have to do my spontaneous things without him. Or spontaneously join him where ever he is.

The next week when the team went to regionals, I went down to Louisville for the tourney, and got a bunch of the other GA's to go with me and we partied away our sorrows when they lost, awfully. It was so fun!

  • Oh I have another, but it was bad. For Easter our Jr. year of college, we both stayed at school. We randomly decided to drive 3 hours to Knoxville to go to a Smokies baseball game, spend the night in Pigeon Forge, and go to Gatlinburg the next day. Well JJ dropped his phone at the baseball stadium, someone called "home" on it and his parents found out where we were. My cell phone was in the car, so they called my parents when they couldn't get a hold of either of us and wanted to know why the hell we were in Knoxville. That one was fun... His parents didn't care as much, but mine were furious that we stayed in a hotel together and didn't tell them where we were going. Oops!

  • I drove from Pensacola to Gainesville. I was with my 2 former HS bffs. We drove to bff #1's (now ex) in-law's house. Her (now ex) husband was underway and she had flown from Oak Harbor, WA back home to visit her friends and family. She wanted to see her ILs so we decided to go to Gainesville.

  • Not much for impromptu trips.  But the lats one I remember was spring break quite a few years back. We went to Panama Beach.  It was me with like a dozen other friends.  There were 3 cars total and from start of discussion to actually leaving Jax was like 2 to 3 hours only.  It was sooo last minute but we all had such a great time!  We had quite a few ppl follow us there and couldn't believe they didn't even get word of us planning the trip.  LOL

  • Two of my old roommates and I drove to Key West.  We were originally only headed to central Florida and for some reason or another, decided to keep driving through the night.  We got there early in the morning, went to the beach and took a nap.  We only stayed one night because the cost of hotels was ridiculous.  I got a major sunburn because I used to be irresponsible and not put on sunblock.  All in all, it was fun :)
