do i cash it?

we got a check in the mail today for $87 from a collection agency, stating that it was overpayment.

however, the only collections we have been dealing with is for DH's hospital bill from when he was 19, and that will be paid off this month.

i called and their automated system said they couldn't find my account (used the number in the letter), and going through my check book i couldn't find a check for $87 for any bill in the last several months.

the company seems legit, at least their call center did, and the check is printed out but the amount is written by hand - it's also got a seal/watermark on the check.

so should i just cash it, or call monday and figure out exactly what it's for before doing anything?

Re: do i cash it?

  • I'd wait. I'd probably call the number again on Monday as well as my bank to see what they think. Also, try Googling the phone number and/or agency name. Just because it seems legit and well organized (working phone and such) doesn't mean it's not a scam.
