Re: (Untitled)
It's the southern pride bit. ?They try to claim it's not offensive b/c they're just proud to be southern. ?Nope ,nothing wrong with the flag, it's just my heritage.
Wink, nod.?
There is also a history behind the swastika that does not involve the Holocaust, but if you chose to celebrate this history, you will be marginalized in society.
Her Logic = FAIL!
I went to college with "War of Northern Aggression" types (they'll argue it was all about states rights and had nothing, nothing to do with slavery). ?And I also went to college with people who openly talked about how sad it was that they lost the battle of Franklin as though it were yesterday.?
It was surreal. ? And it's why I haven't gone back since I graduated and probably will never go back. ?Those crazies are still close friends, but, damn, I can't be surrounded by it.
I totally think we should take that one back. I never understood why they got to keep it.
There's a huge difference between having pride about the South, versus having pride in what the Confederacy stood for.
The South = southern hospitality, slower way of life, and sweet tea.
The Confederacy = white people owning black people.
My extremely southern friend visited Tokyo with me. ?She couldn't get over all the swastikas. ?She was appalled and couldn't get over it even after I explained to her the history. ?She thought they should stop using them given their more recent connotations.
Now, she does not have a confederate flag. ?She's the debutante genteel type of southerner. ?But I know she's defended its use in state flags on the grounds of tradition.
I couldn't get her to see the paralells.?
OMG, thank you! It's not like they wanted to levy their own taxes or have their own schools; it was over wanting to OWN HUMAN BEINGS.
?
Ditto?
I thought they wanted to secede from the union for a number of reasons, cultural, and economic, not just b/c they wanted to have slaves.
I still don't like it.
