Moms - maternity pants

How do pregnant women wear maternity pants? I've worn three different pairs/types of pants and I find them to be incredibly painful. Specifically, the elastic top part that lays on the top of my belly. It feels like my lower ribs and upper stomach are being squeezed to death. I end up pulling the whole panel down to my hips after 5 mins thus defeating the purpose of the pants. It's not that the pants are too small either; they're my size and fit fine. I also find belly bands to be too tight and painful and I'm not even that big yet. I just can't fathom how this will get better/become less painful over time. It's a bummer because I like the way they look and I want to wear them. Am I just a weirdo?

  • are u talking about the full panel ones? i had that problem with a pair from old navy...they are skinny jeans, so i only wear them once in awhile if we go out somewhere that i want to be a little more dressed up.  lately i've been wearing jeans from Motherhood (full panel, boot cut).  They are really comfortable! I also had good luck with a pair from kohls.  You may want to look into the under the belly style...i wore those for awhile, but they became uncomfortable for me around 25-26 weeks.

  • i actually only found the full panel to be comfortable because i was so big.  i think the full panel are more comfortable when you have a big ol' belly.  otherwise wearing them below the belly is fine.  i think it's more about comfort and what works over anything else.  i found that the liz lange line from target worked best because they make their pants so they can be worn under, mid or over the belly as you grow.

Yes, the full panel. It's not the entire panel that bothers me though, just the very top 1-2 inch elastic band part, where the pants begin. The belly bands bother me all over.

  • I hated the full panels!  I bought demi-panels.  These are the pants that I bought from gap:

    and

(I used a coupon...  cause damn they're expensive)

  • I wish I could help but I never wore any, I just used my bella bands with my 'fat' pants. And the band never bothered me.

  • I liked the full panel as well, but they bothered me a bit till I was like 24 weeks or so, when I really started to show, they were more comfy. I liked Koh's brand the best.

What brand are you wearing?  I had the Motherhood secret fit belly jeans with the full panel and they were the most comfortable things in the world.  I actually got my work pants through them too.

ETA: I had a pair of jeans and work pants from Old Navy as well and the elastic at the top of the panel was thick and hard - they weren't nearly as comfortable and I ended up almost never wearing them.

  • I had a love/hate relationship with full panel pants. Some days they were great and other days they just hurt my belly so much. On the days I hated them, I just rolled the panel down in half and found it to be comfy that way. All of my full panels were from Motherhood as well. I had a pair of jeans I got at JC Penny's I think that just had a wide band and I loved them.

  • Ouch! As if you're not uncomfortable enough.

I never had that issue. I wore full panel GAP jeans and Motherhood Maternity pants for work. And below the belly sweatpants. A lot.  If anything, the GAP jeans' panel was too loose until later in the pg.

  • Yep, the pants are from Old Navy. Guess I'll be making a trip to Motherhood. Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy.

  • I bought some below the belly jeans from Motherhood and LOVED THEM all the way up until I delivered. I wore them to the hospital in fact. I felt like I was being smushed in any other jeans. I hope you find some that work soon!
  • I've been wearing a very unattractive pair from Target (pockets on a pregnant women who already had big hips = not cute), they are full panel and pretty comfy so that is why I keep wearing them.
  • I went shopping for maternity pants this weekend because my regular pants just weren't fitting anymore.  I went to Motherhood (Destination Maternity branch) and loved their cargos - I bought every color in 1 style and they roll-up to capris (2 things for 1).  They are the so comfy.  My problem is I am not big enough yet and the full panel keeps sliding down.  I have it rolled down around my waist and am not having any issues.
