How do pregnant women wear maternity pants? I've worn three different pairs/types of pants and I find them to be incredibly painful. Specifically, the elastic top part that lays on the top of my belly. It feels like my lower ribs and upper stomach are being squeezed to death. I end up pulling the whole panel down to my hips after 5 mins thus defeating the purpose of the pants. It's not that the pants are too small either; they're my size and fit fine. I also find belly bands to be too tight and painful and I'm not even that big yet. I just can't fathom how this will get better/become less painful over time. It's a bummer because I like the way they look and I want to wear them. Am I just a weirdo?

Yes, the full panel. It's not the entire panel that bothers me though, just the very top 1-2 inch elastic band part, where the pants begin. The belly bands bother me all over.
I hated the full panels! I bought demi-panels. These are the pants that I bought from gap:

and

(I used a coupon... cause damn they're expensive)
What brand are you wearing? I had the Motherhood secret fit belly jeans with the full panel and they were the most comfortable things in the world. I actually got my work pants through them too.
ETA: I had a pair of jeans and work pants from Old Navy as well and the elastic at the top of the panel was thick and hard - they weren't nearly as comfortable and I ended up almost never wearing them.

Ouch! As if you're not uncomfortable enough.
I never had that issue. I wore full panel GAP jeans and Motherhood Maternity pants for work. And below the belly sweatpants. A lot. If anything, the GAP jeans' panel was too loose until later in the pg.
I went shopping for maternity pants this weekend because my regular pants just weren't fitting anymore. I went to Motherhood (Destination Maternity branch) and loved their cargos - I bought every color in 1 style and they roll-up to capris (2 things for 1). They are the so comfy. My problem is I am not big enough yet and the full panel keeps sliding down. I have it rolled down around my waist and am not having any issues.
