Long Island?

Hi All,My husband and I are doing a second honeymoon to NYC in mid-April.  We are considering a day trip to Long Island.  Thoughts?  Is this a good idea/something fun to do?  Anything in particular that is fun and especially interesting to see there? Thanks!

Re: Long Island?

  • I personally wouldn't make the trip.  Long Island is mostly suburban sprawl with normal suburban things to do (like malls and such).  There are beaches, but the ones that I think would be worth the trip (Fire Island and the Hamptons) are quite far from the city.  Wine country is also fun, but again -- quite far from the city.  Other than that, there are museums and such but none of them that I can't think of would compare to what you'd see in the city.

If you want to do a day trip out of the city, I'm a bigger fan of the Hudson River Valley.

Have you worked Brooklyn into your itinerary?  That's an escape from Manhattan that is easy to do, and there are tons of interesting things to do there.

  • I think it would make a lovely day or overnight trip. I agree that the best things to see are way out on the North Fork/South Fork. The advantages of going at that time of year is that it's lovely but you won't have all the crowds. Some ideas: wine tasting on the North Fork, stopping at a farm stand for some treats, day in Greenport (Claudio's clam bar for a drink), taking ferry to Shelter Island, Montauk lighthouse, taking a long walk along the beaches at the Hamptons, having a nice seafood or steak dinner. You would have to work out logistics.  Maybe rent a car.

i second 315 bride on these...all very good ideas...i think it would have to be at least one overnight, though, because it takes at least 3 hours to get to the forks from the city, more if there's traffic (which is usually the case).

  • Nope. You have everything at your fingertips in the city. LI has lots of great options for a vacation but its not a day-trip from NYC at all. And April is way too early to enjoy the beaches or to feel motivated to get out of the heat of the city. In all likelihood, the weathe ris going to be perfect for parks and attractions. Enjoy it!
