Contact the hiring official?
I have applied for a job with the following language
"For further information, please contact XXX"
They provided an email address however one can search the directory and find the phone number of the hiring official. At first, I thought it was the HR contact but then I googled and the HO would actually be the person the position would be reporting to.
1) Would you contact the HO so that you stand out from the crowd
2) If you did, would you use email or telephone
3) What kinds of questions would you have for the HO to justify the "for further information contact XXX" scenario
Re: Contact the hiring official?
1) I would follow the instructions noted in the job advertisement! Otherwise you'll look like the candidate who doesn't know how to follow instructions.
2) You WILL be contacting the HO via e-mail...when you send them your resume.
3) write a brilliant cover letter within the body of the email. That will make you stand out from the crowd.
I called the HO for a job once, I thought I would really stand out. I did too, as a pest. He told me to follow the directions on the posting. I didnt get that interview.
However, I know this can go both ways. I can think of many instances where this worked out. Infact, I instructed a friend to email the HO for a job I once would have helped in the interview process of. My advise to her was to apply as directed and send her resume and statment of interest to the HO. She got the job.
If you do either, I would say email. This makes you less pest-like.
What about e-mailing the HO and asking questions like what kind of person/traits/qualifications they were looking for in a competitive candidate?
This way you've stood out, but haven't actually "broken" any rules/instructions...
