Black Tie Optional

Help me!

One of the weddings I talked about below (the one happening in August) is going to be "Black Tie Optional."

The venue is gorgeous, but very formal. However, I talked to my friend and she said she really is just hoping people won't wear jeans (like "dressed-up club wear") or khakis/polos. I asked if my husband could wear slacks/tie or slacks/jacket/no tie, and she said either of those were completely acceptable.

So....uh....what should I wear? (I know I have time, but I'm hoping I could maybe snag something on sale as formal event season ends...)

Re: Black Tie Optional

  • If it's not really black tie, wear what you'd normally wear to a non-casual wedding. A cute dress!

  • Is a cocktail dress okay? When I first asked about it, our other mutual friend said "Ballgowns" and laughed. The bride's response "Well, it doesn't really have to be a ball gown, but fancy."

Should I try to do floor length? Or would tea length be okay? If it's a shorter dress, maybe in a darker color or metallic?

  • Tell the bride to stop being ambiguous!

I'd be leery to do floor length unless you know a lot of others doing the same. If you do go knee or tea, yes, I'd probably do an LBD with a statement piece of jewelery. I can shop later if you want!

  • Yeah, I think you're wide open on what you can wear. Just find something fabulous and comfortable (and on sale, of course!).  LBD with colorful jewelry, cocktail dress if you want an excuse to get something fancier. :)
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I would probably go LBD or cocktail dress with fun jewelry. Mostly because I am always looking for an excuse to by either one and this seems like an appropriate event.

  • I love floor length. And if you shop the outlet malls there are great bargains to be had. I always have great luck at the BCBG outlet. I loooove that place!
  • If it were me, I'd do floor length. I got an awesome dress from BCBG for a good price a few years ago for the Inauguration Ball, so it might be worth looking at the outlet as Lark suggested.
