BR: Sippies

I know around 12 months G shouldn't be drinking from a bottle anymore. At what age did you replace a bottle with a sippy? Pedi recommended trying to take away one bottle at a time, lunch one first. But I never asked when to start.

G loves to drink water from a sippy but will.not.drink formula from a sippy. I've tried three different kinds. She has a bottle with every meal, I offer her a sippy with the formula in it and then whatever she doesn't drink (usually she drinks nothing, sometimes she takes sips and spits it out) I give her the formula in a bottle.

Should I not worry yet? I've been doing this for about a month and she has no interest in formula w/o a bottle. Also-she won't drink cold formula, it has to be room temp. Normal?

  • Don't worry about it yet.  I never gave N formula in a sippy.  Around 11 months, I started giving her a little whole milk in a sippy with meals so she could get used to the taste and drinking at meal time.  We quit bottles and formula cold turkey the day after her first birthday and she didn't have a problem at all!

  • Michael never drank formula from a Sippy either. He drank water out of one before a year, and then we started replacing bottles with the milk/Sippy. It was a gradual process, we hung on to the night bottle until about 14 months. You'll get there!!

  • Like pps said, I wouldn't worry about it too much. She might just associate formula with the bottle and that's okay. When you start transitioning to cow's milk she will probably be good at drinking that from the sippy if she is already good at drinking water from it. We were fortunate in that E LOVED the sippy and is a huge milk girl so the transition was pretty easy for us. Around 11 months we started doing bottles only morning and night and replaced the rest of her bottles with a sippy and it worked great!
