Teachers

If you don't mind sharing, what district do you work for and do you know when they will be announcing teacher layoffs?  I have heard that Leander will be addressing teachers mid April.  They have already been laying off librarians, quest teachers, and facilitators - that I'm aware of.

Re: Teachers

  • Pflugerville is announcing teacher position layoffs on March 28, 29.  Some of us have already found out....specialty teachers and master/department leads have already been notified.

I've been hearing more and more that there will probably be a large number of job openings come July when the budget is finally done with the state.

Good luck!  I love teaching, and I'm heart broken they cut my position :(

  • I work for RR and they keep changing the date.  At first they made it seem like we'd know by the normal time (mid-April, I think), then they called a faculty meeting and said before Spring Break.  Then, last week we get an email saying probably the last week of March.  AND...get this, they told us that legislators are considering pushing the notification date back until the 10th day after classes end.  So, if that passes we might not even find out until mid-June!  It's insane.

Angelaggie - Are you saying that they're laying off some of the department leads and telling them already or that they know who out of their department will be let go?

(I'll prob dd my district name in a little while.)

Several of the department leads across the district are being let go, and then get this...replaced with less experienced (cheaper) teachers.  There are also talks going on of not paying the department leads and master teachers their extra stipend.  One of the team leads at the high school has 10 years experience, she's being replaced with someone with 1 year experience.  But since it's RIF it doesn't really matter why.  Other than that, we don't know who out of the department will be let go.  As of now, I'm the only math teacher at my high school that knows anything, but that's because I'm ESL.

I'm going to DD a lot of this by tomorrow too.  It just sucks all around for everyone.

  • leander isd is going to notify teachers the week after spring break (that's their latest target, at least).  the date that the district must offer contracts by is april 7th, so if the legislature doesn't pass the 10 day rule before then, the district has to either offer a contract or not offer a contract by that date.

apparently, any teachers whose positions will be cut will be repositioned.  if there aren't enough "slots" for them to fit into due to attrition numbers, teachers on probationary contracts (i.e. 1-3 year teachers and new to district) might be let go and their spots will be filled with term contract teachers.  if there are slots left over after the budget is finalized at the state level, those probationary teachers will be renewed then.

i do know that some facilitators have been notified that their positions are being cut, but i haven't heard of any librarians or teachers (like QUEST) being informed yet.  restructuring QUEST at the middle school (and maybe high school) level is being discussed, but i haven't heard that anything's been decided.

  • AngelAggie.. Im so sorry that your position has been cut. My DH was telling me that there is a math position in your district already for next year?!?

DH has been stalking all of the districts websites for job fairs and most of the ones posted are for internal positions at this time. So that is a plus for people that are being laid off or already have.

There's a 6th,7th,8th math recovery position open, but I'm not 4-8 certified.  My understanding is you have to be certified for each of those grades.

I'm going to take my 4-8 math/science certification and also my 8-12 science certification this summer just to make myself more marketable.  I have more than enough college science hours to be considered Highly Certified.

"A highly qualified teacher is defined as one who has obtained a full state teacher certification or has passed the state teacher licensing examination and holds a license to teach in the state; holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree; and has demonstrated subject area competence in each of the academic subjects in which the teacher teaches."

What she copied :)  I was told 24 hours in that particular subject area.  Since I have a BS in Math, I have more than enough science and math credits.
