spots on clothes after washing, what is it?

We have three year old front loading LG HE washer and dryer and love them.  We do use only HE detergent.  We really like them except lately after dark clothes are through washing and drying I am noticing little spots on the clothes that look like grease.  They are clear and mostly on dark solid color clothes,  it looks like it would if you are cooking and olive oil gets on your clothes or something.

I have tried putting it on and extra rinse cycle after its done washing but it doesnt seem to help.  Any experience or tips?

Re: spots on clothes after washing, what is it?

  • Are you leaving anything in pockets? My clothes get like that when I leave chapstick in my jeans pockets and it goes through the wash and dryer.
  • I'm not sure- but it sounds like soap buildup or possibly an overloaded machine.  (Lots of ladies have suggested 1/2 c. vinegar on an empty cycle- and run extra cycles if you notice that it's really soapy).

  • I do check the pockets and this happens nearly every time I do a load.  I use a dryer sheet in the dryer but no liquid fabric softeners.  I will try the vinegar thing though, thanks!
  • That same thing happened to me when I was using the Purex 3-in-1 laundry sheets, but it doesn't sound like that's what you are using.

I think it's soap buildup as well. We're having this problem, too. I do need to wash out the inside of the machine, but we also make sure to add the detergent when the water is running through that tray. It prevents soap residue from builing up in there.

  • I have the same problem, and it is really annoying, especially when I wash brand new clothes and they look like they have grease spots. I don't think it is soap build up, my washing machine is pretty much brand new, we just bought it in January. We have a Samsung, and use Tide HE detergent. I have tried vinegar, but it did not make a difference, I still get the spots...
  • Just lurking and saw your post...I just read something about this in Good Housekeeping. I *believe* the advice was to wash with sudsy ammonia?

You could google it for more info, or see if their website has the article. It was a Q&A little blurb in a recent issue.
