Boston Apartment Hunting

My husband and I are moving to Boston in June and plan to rent an apartment at least for a year.  I'll be working at Childrens Hospital and he's currently looking for a job.

I was wondering if any of you have suggestions for neighborhoods to live in that would be convenient to the Hospital?  Also, what are some of the best ways to find an apartment?  Through a broker/agent?  Craigslist?  Other suggestions?

I'd appreciate any help that you all can give me.

Thanks!

Re: Boston Apartment Hunting

  • Welcome (soon) to Boston!

Children's is in the Longwood area on the D or E line of the Green Line (the T aka subway - that part is above ground though). So anywhere along the D or E lines would be the easiest for you to commute to Children's. The T goes all around the city, so any where in Boston proper would be very easy. As for outside the city it would depend on how far you wanted to commute. You could look in Arlington right by Alewife (Red Line)...that would take you less than an hour (I'd imagine) by taking the T the whole way. Anywhere in Cambridge would cut that down since the Red Line goes right through it.

When I looked for apartment before I always used realtor.com. You need to be careful with CraigsList because there are scams on there. But since you don't know the area well you can always use a realtor to help guide you through the areas. GL!

  • Brookline.

I have always used CL but there are some scams there. Just use your common sense!

  • I was also going to suggest Brookline.  It's a great town, pricey to buy in but a great place to live with lots of cool shops, restaurants, etc. in the neighborhood.

There's also at least one big apartment complex near the hospital area that I know of, Longfellow Place Apartments.  Here's a link I found: http://www.equityapartments.com/massachusetts/boston-apartments/west-end/the-west-end-apartments.aspx

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Along with Brookline I'd suggest Jamaica Plain.
  • If you have no knowledge of the area, I would probably recommend using a broker rather than CL. That way you'll have someone who knows the area... It would be worth the $, IMO.
  • I'd recommend looking in the Fenway too.  Very walkable to Longwood and a nice area.
