Hey, I saw the bit you added to your sig about your IVF plans and I noticed the part that says Dx: Mild hypothyroidism. First, if you don't mind my asking, what does this mean, the Dx particularly. I assume it's a diagnosis?
I ask because my OBGYN just tested me on Friday for my thyroid and I'm waiting on the results. I had a normal cycle last month, but as of right now I'm waiting for it arrive again and I'm on day 42. I'm definitely not pregnant, since she rush tested that and I'm taking hormones to jump-start things. I was just wondering what you could tell me about it since I'm pretty sure I have hypothyroidism, just a mild case because I've been tested before and it didn't show up abnormal. I just don't know what it would mean in terms of trying to get pregnant.
If you don't feel comfortable answering here you can PM me and I can delete this.
Re: ***Lori***
I have no problem talking about it here. Hypothyroidism means you have an elevated TSH to compensate for your thyroid underworking (I think, don't quote me on that!). I had no idea that I had any thyroid issues but my fertility doctor discovered it as part of routine bloodwork. It wasn't that bad; I think the original figure for my TSH level was around 4.4. Typically under 4 is considered normal, but when you're TTC they say you should aim for between 1 and 2. It doesn't prevent you from getting pregant but you can have a greater risk of miscarriage if it's too high.
My doctor wanted it to be under control before having treatment. She put me on a low-ish dose of Synthroid and within 4 weeks, my TSH was at a good level. I am under the care an endocrinologist who wants me to do bloodwork every 3 months. If/when I get pregnant I'll have to get bloodwork every 4 weeks or so, because your TSH can get wacky during pregnancy.
For me, it never impacted my cycles and I really didn't have any symptoms, so I was really surprised when I found out. The good thing is that it's a very easy to manage condition, you just have to find the right dose of Synthroid.
Thanks for explaining that. I thought I read/heard somewhere that taking thyroid medication while pregnant wasn't advisable, but I guess not. When I told my OBgyn that I hadn't had my period in 6 weeks she immediately went to testing the thyroid, so I didn't know if that was connected.
I have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, so I'd be really surprised if something doesn't show up this time. Especially since I think I was just barely in the normal range 2 years ago.
Good luck with your IVF and I'll keep thinking about you and sending good baby vibes your way!
