Birth Control - IUD's

Has anyone here experienced/used one of these?  I'm reading up on Mirena right now, considering getting that put in at my 6 week appt.  Seems like it's the best bc option for us since I'm still pumping.

Re: Birth Control - IUD's

  • You can have abnormal bleeding for up to 12 months after insertion of a Mirena IUD. Mirena has hormones, Paraguard ( copper ) has no hormones so your body will have to get used to more hormones esp after giving birth and pumping. we put them in all the time and more often removed them within 5 months - ladies couldn't handle the bleeding. Everyone is different of course, but it was common to hear that thier partner could feel it. Sometimes the IUD can fall out o place too. There have been plenty of ladies who have them placed with no problems or side effects, when looking at the cost it does sway most. I'm not anti IUD but I am not really a fan lm just trying to tell you what I know !
  • i'm glad you posted this heather, i've been wondering about them, too. what are the other options if you're BFing/pumping?

    Mini-pill, Depo, Implanon, condoms, diaphragm

I recommend using kellymom.com as your main resource for BFing info.

Personally, I take the mini-pill, but if you weren't a pill taker prior, it is kind of a scary option. Two of the moms on my birth board are pregnant now because they weren't diligent with the mini-pill. You have to take it at the same time each day, and my MW recommended taking it approximately 4 hours before your normal sexy time...so if you're bedtime kind of people, take it at supper every night.  It hasn't affected my supply at all, but I know that's not the case with everyone.

ETA: Heather, I know there are some girls on my birth board that LOVE Mirena and would recommend it to anyone. I don't have any experience with it, though- I've been a pill-taker since I started hormonal BC.

  • My sister had Mirena and had it removed.  She said it was extremely painful (even months later) and couldn't take it.  I believe my sister had to pay a lot of money for hers at her insurance didn't cover it that great (even though she has great insurance).I guess they are sort of a hit or miss.

I think the cost of Mirena out of pocket is $700.

At the office, we had people pay for it out of pocket, because as a physician, we would have to pay $500 to order them for the patient then we were only reimbursed about $200 - and at the rate we removed them we were losing money so bad.

  • hmmm, i was a pill-taker before.

fwiw, my coworker has an iud and has had no problems with it.
