Poll: Which would you choose?

Our church is planning a missions trip to help out an orphanage in Guatemala. I really want to go.

The thing is, that the date that we would get back is the date of our family reunion.

I asked about flight return times because I'd be willing to fly back in, and drive to Iowa to participate (it would suck, but I'd still do it). I just received a message saying there isn't any solid information, because they're in the early booking stages with people.

The non refundable deposit is due Wednesday, and I'd be going into it blindly in regards to a return time for a flight.

I haven't seen my mom's side of the family since 2004.  We're not really the family get together type. Normally it's funerals and milestones. It is also in Iowa... a really small town in Iowa. I think pop. less than 1,000. I'm not sure what we'd be doing, and most folks would be there on Sunday as well.

Both are something I'd like to participate in, but I'm really on the fence about what to do.

Re: Poll: Which would you choose?

  • What will your church do with the deposit if you don't go?  Will they use the money for their mission there?  If so, I'd put down the deposit and move on with it as if you're going to go.

  • A trip like that is once in a lifetime.  My family (even distant family I hadn't seen in a while) would totally support me going to something like that, even if it meant potentially missing the family reunion.

  • Go to Guatemala. It would be an amazing experience and I'm sure your family would understand if you couldn't make it.

  • Well, mission trips are amazing, so I would say do that! But...could you fly back on your own...like not with the main group? That way you'd be home on time for the reunion?
  • Go on the mission trip. When again will you be able to say that you went to help an orphanage in Guatemala?

I'm sure family will understand. Is there anyone in the reunion that you haven't seen in a really long time that you would not get the opportunity to see other than at the reunion?

I can see about that. I wonder if there would be a way.  I'll send her a message to ask. Good idea Rach.

Most of my aunts, uncles, and cousins.  My aunt lives in Iowa, and last spring drove up to MN to shop at the MoA. Other than than I hadn't seen her in years.

I'd assume that most people would still be there for a Sunday breakfast at least.

  • I am partial since Floyd is from Guatemala, but I say definitely go to Guatemala.  Not only to go help but to experience the beautiful scenery and the wonderful sense of culture they have.  Floyd just went back in December and I got to see tons of pictures/videos.  Do you know where in Guatemala you would be going?

That is a good idea, I would definitely look into that!

  • Does your church do frequent mission trips? If not, I would definitely jump on this opportunity. You can always forfeit the deposit if you have second thoughts about missing the family reunion. And maybe it'll just work itself out and you can do both!

    Just outside of Guatemala City.

This is the first that we've had since I've been there. There are other conventions that our church participates in, nothing like this though.

The other kicker is that I have a wedding the day before we leave. Sucker for punishment on this trip. haha. Sleep on the plane. Pack for both trips prior to that Saturday.

Riss asked what I was thinking.  If it's not something that your church does frequently, then I say go for it.  It will be a long tiring week but the people you'll help and the memories and experiences will all be well worth it.  Doo iiit!

  • Go to Guatemala, and see if you can either leave a day early, or convince your family to stay an extra day.
  • I'd choose Guatamala, but it's easy for me to say that, because we have a family reunion every year. We're looking into a missions trip to Hondorus this summer and I'm super pumped about it.

ETA: I agree that the frequency of mission trips your church does is a major factor. Ours does at least 1 a year, and we're off all summer, so it's easy for us to participate. It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime memory, even if you go more than once in your life. :)

  • I vote for Guatemala as well. My aunt and cousin did a dentistry trip to Guatemala and absolutely LOVED it. They said it was one of the best experiences of their lives.

  • I also say go to Guatemala. Try like other pp's said to cut it a day short or something so you can make it to the reunion. It will definitely be tiring but if you can get all of it in, the wedding, Guatemala, and Iowa, then you'll be set for the year for trips! :)
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...
