Our church is planning a missions trip to help out an orphanage in Guatemala. I really want to go.
The thing is, that the date that we would get back is the date of our family reunion.
I asked about flight return times because I'd be willing to fly back in, and drive to Iowa to participate (it would suck, but I'd still do it). I just received a message saying there isn't any solid information, because they're in the early booking stages with people.
The non refundable deposit is due Wednesday, and I'd be going into it blindly in regards to a return time for a flight.
I haven't seen my mom's side of the family since 2004. We're not really the family get together type. Normally it's funerals and milestones. It is also in Iowa... a really small town in Iowa. I think pop. less than 1,000. I'm not sure what we'd be doing, and most folks would be there on Sunday as well.
Both are something I'd like to participate in, but I'm really on the fence about what to do.

Re: Poll: Which would you choose?
Stand up for something you believe in.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!

Go on the mission trip. When again will you be able to say that you went to help an orphanage in Guatemala?
I'm sure family will understand. Is there anyone in the reunion that you haven't seen in a really long time that you would not get the opportunity to see other than at the reunion?
I can see about that. I wonder if there would be a way. I'll send her a message to ask. Good idea Rach.

Most of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. My aunt lives in Iowa, and last spring drove up to MN to shop at the MoA. Other than than I hadn't seen her in years.
I'd assume that most people would still be there for a Sunday breakfast at least.

That is a good idea, I would definitely look into that!

This is the first that we've had since I've been there. There are other conventions that our church participates in, nothing like this though.
The other kicker is that I have a wedding the day before we leave. Sucker for punishment on this trip. haha. Sleep on the plane. Pack for both trips prior to that Saturday.

Riss asked what I was thinking. If it's not something that your church does frequently, then I say go for it. It will be a long tiring week but the people you'll help and the memories and experiences will all be well worth it. Doo iiit!
I'd choose Guatamala, but it's easy for me to say that, because we have a family reunion every year. We're looking into a missions trip to Hondorus this summer and I'm super pumped about it.
ETA: I agree that the frequency of mission trips your church does is a major factor. Ours does at least 1 a year, and we're off all summer, so it's easy for us to participate. It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime memory, even if you go more than once in your life.
