Well isn't this just lovely.. *vent*

Yesterday there was a funky - I mean fun-KY - odor coming from our master bath.  Musty grossness.  It's also been pretty wet around here the last two days - more rain that we've gotten a lil while.  J is off work this morning (and thankfully the next two days) so he decided to break into the wall behind our shower to see if there was something going on back there.  This smell has happened twice in the last couple months - both during times of heavy rains.  This isn't looking good.  So he breaks into the wall (which is in a closet thankfully haha) and what does he find first before anything else?  A goddamn carpenter ant nest.  Jesus.

Now, we've seen carpenter ants randomly.  And even spoke with an exterminator about it - he didn't come check out our house, but based on the number of ants we've seen (just random ones near the front door of the house, and never any swarming) he said they were probably just infesting the tree in our front yard.  We treat the tree every spring and it keeps them away, no big deal.  We're not sure how they are getting in the house - but you know how ants are.  Ugh.  Although I will admit the last couple days I feel like I've seen quite a few more but figured with the warm weather and then the rain it's just expected - plus it's time for our bug treatments anyway and J just hasn't gotten to the bug-treatment-store (lol or wherever he gets the stuff).  But I didn't expect a goddamn nest in the wall.  Not to mention, all the wood in that area is like weirdly moist so now along with getting rid of the nest, we need to figure out what is going on with that - and possibly rip out the master shower.  W...T....F.....

And let me not forget to mention that the closet in the new baby's room is still not built.  And my parents are planning to come down from Missouri to stay HERE... in our house... OMG, I'm going to have a heart attack.

  • Oh, that sucks!!! Hopefully you can get it call cleared up with just a spray in the walls and then seal it all back. What do you do in the meantime? Just tape it back shut to keep in the ants??

You're gonna think I'm insane, but before J left to go to Home Depot to try to get specific carpenter ant killer (they sell it, but it's not the "high powered" stuff they sell elsewhere - according to J... I am clueless on this) I told him to vaccuum the damn things up with the shop vac.  Yeah... we did that.  The nest was totally exposed so we could see the entire thing - which is a good thing for us because it will be much easier to get rid of them.  According to Google anyway.  LOL

So we shop vac'd the suckers.  Which pissed them off like woah.  J then ran to Home Depot, got the stuff and sprayed them to high hell.  Ugh.  The nest (which we are guessing is actually a satellite nest because it wasn't HUGE andplusalso Google says so lol) died like quick.  Thru the afternoon I kept finding dead ants all around the closet.  I kept the vaccuum nearby.  Bleh!

BMW - carpenter ants are like these huge ass black ants - I swear they are so big.  They don't eat wood, but nest and tunnel in it.

Anyway, now we wait to make sure the ants are gone for good and J has to figure out why that area is moist and decide if we need to rip out our shower.  *siiiiiggghhh*
  • Ugh!  I didn't know carpenter ants lived in the south.  I only ever saw them when we lived in New England.  Hope you are able to get rid of them.

  • Oh no!  I hope it gets taken care of quickly and easily.
  • Are carpenter ants the small tiny ones?  We've been having an issue in our master bath with them for a couple of months here and there...but always in one spot..wait do carpenter aunts bite?  Because I got bit by one of these little bastards but they're not the normally looking fire ants.

We researched it and it appears down here especially that is a problem especially in bathrooms.

    That really sucks

You know I love the south right?  I can't imagine living somewhere where it actually gets COLD.  And tho J and I entertain the idea of moving someday - I don't know if we will ever leave NOLA.  But dude the goddamn bugs!!  LOL

I googled a pic for you - this makes me feel itchy!  lol
