Background:
I'm currently a Pharmacy Technician that graduated from college with a degree in English. It's a good paying job and I've only been in the position full-time for 4 months (I was part time for 3 months before that). This position is within the same company that I worked with for over a year before I started doing anything with the Pharmacy. All in all, I've been with the company just under 2 years.
Question:
There is a publishing company in the area that is hiring for an Assistant Editor for a fitness magazine. What I really wanted to do with my degree was be an editor. I fit all the criteria for the job. H really likes the position and the money that I'm making right now, but it's not what I want to do with my life. I love to write and edit. It's always been a passion of mine. Do you think I should apply? Do you think that only being in the new position for 4 months would hurt my chances of getting an interview or the job? The only reason that I changed positions is because H got a new job that moved us out-of-state and I needed to find work.
Sorry if this is a flameful question, I'm just really torn. I feel like people will be disappointed if I give up this new job.
Re: Job Advice
Honestly, I think you should definitely apply. If it turns out that your lack of time at your current job excludes you, then so be it, but I don't think that worries over not getting the job should prevent you from applying. After all, if you don't apply, you definitely won't get the job, right?
If you interview and they ask why you would leave a job so quickly, you could always explain that you recently moved and needed employment, but THIS is really what you want to do, etc.
Good luck!
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
I think you should definitely apply, at the very least. If your qualifications should get you an interview, at that point if they ask about the length of time at your current job, you can address it then.
Good luck
Definitely apply!
And honestly, given the job market these last couple of years, most employers understand why you took a job in a different field and then you moved. All you need to tell them is you have been waiting for an opportunity like this (they know how few there are).
You're in PA now, right? Is it Shape Magazine? I think they're a Weider Publication and they used to be based in PA. Or it's with Rodale, also in PA.
And if you have any questions about editor jobs, PM me. And good luck!
(ETA: I meant to say Shape Magazine, not Fitness.)
Where is Weider? I'm in Allentown, PA. I would love any advice, contacts, etc you could give me!
Weider is the publishing company (or used to be anyway, so much congolmeration these days in publishing) of Shape Magazine, not a town. I'm not sure where they are located. I know Runner's World is published by Rodale, which is in Emmerus (sp?) PA. Not sure how far that is from Allentown, but if it's RW you're applying to, be prepared to run. Their whole staff is, obviously, running-centric.
I don't have any leads, just advice. If you want to send me the job description and your cover letter and CV, I'd be happy to take a look at it, make sure you're including the salient points.
