So I talked to DH a bit last night about my job. I basically told him that I've had enough of being unhappy in my job. While I love what I do and what my organization does, I can't stand to stay at a place where I'm not appreciated and treated badly. I told him that we don't need to save as much as we're saving. He's saving 1/2 of my salary a month which is significant and that's not taking into account what he puts into his 401k, stocks or Lucie's college savings. I told him that it's ok for us to not be as saving as much right now, we're still very young and even if I stayed home for 10 years, when I return to work I'll be 37 and still have plenty of time to save. I told him that my happiness is more important than money and I really don't truly think he has seen until now how upset this is making me. Plus, I'll be a better mother if I haven't spent all day being yelled at!
I know that his main reason for saving is not for the future but for emergencies, but we've got quite a foundation already and I'm not asking to not work at all. I want to find a PT job. If this elance stuff works out - there are lots of people looking for FT and PT assistants, not just one time projects and they're more flexible with hours, so I could work those hours around Lucie. I would still probably send her to her sitter a couple of days a week (if I make enough to afford it) so I can get my work done without distractions but my schedule would be so much more flexible and I would spend so much more time with her.
I have a couple bids out on elance for jobs that are 10-15 hours a week. If I can get a couple of those and the pay enough (problem is some of them will only pay 1/2 of what I make now and I don't want to take that huge of a cut) then if they seem secure enough I think it may be time to quit my job.
Please send me positive vibes that these people will pay attention to me and want to hire me and I can figure out something that works. One guy actually asked me how many hours I would need to quit my job so I guess he was interested, but he was only paying like $8/hour which isn't enough for a FT job.
Sorry for the essay!!!
Re: Talked to DH (Job related)
Good luck, Caroline!! I really hope that this all works out for you!
I do understand the frustration with the pay. I think that employers focus on "you get to work flexible hours from home," and they think that makes it worth the pay cut. For my company, our part-timers only get paid $12/hr (which is certainly better than $8, but still). As a salaried employee, I'm getting paid now what I made my first year teaching, and I have 10 years of experience, plus 20-some hours of grad credit. I would probably be making an extra $20-$30K if I went back to the regular classroom. So while I'm definitely not saying that you should take a job paying minimum wage, you may find that the pay will be less than you'd hoped for.
Or you'll find a perfectly awesome situation where someone truly realizes the value of the work that you do and will be willing to pay what you deserve.
