Going back to Gainesville on Saturday!
...for a nice little nostalgic day at my alma mater. I haven't been to G-ville since 2006 for a brief visit with a friend in law school, and before that I hadn't been there since 2004, when I graduated. I decided this year that once football season was over, I would force H to go there with me so we could walk on campus, drive around the city, go to the Oaks Mall where I used to work, etc. It should be kind of fun.
For those who are still familiar with the town, do you recommend any awesome places for lunch and dinner?
Re: Going back to Gainesville on Saturday!
I'm jealous of your trip.
I also graduated in '04, and went back for a weekend/football game in '05, and then stopped there for a few hours on my way out of state in '08. The time in '08 was super brief, but we did some of what you're talking about - wandered past our old stomping grounds, checked out the field, etc. We had pizza at Italian Gator on University Ave, because I used to live in Murphree Hall right there and ate Italian Gator all. the. time. Then we had dinner at Calico Jack's because I used to work there. I doubt those count as "awesome places," but they were nostalgic for us.
I'm curious, where in the mall did you work?
Anyway, I have no recommendations, just wanted to say how jealous I am! I would love to go back again. Have fun!

Sounds like a fun weekend! I haven't been back to Gainesville since 2007 when I graduated, except for stopping by for lunch on my way to Tallahassee (where my family lives). Definitely go to Bento for lunch or dinner, it is both mine and my H's favorite restaurant in Gainesville, partially b/c we met there but they do have great sushi, Asian food and bubble teas! There are 2 of them now, one by the movie theater on Newberry and one on Archer road across from Target.Whenever we drive up to Tally for the holidays we always make point to stop there on our way!
I also always liked Liquid Ginger or The Top downtown for dinner if they're both still there.
How fun! I don' know Gainesville very well so I don't have any suggestions, but that sounds like a lovely trip.
Coincidentally, I'll be in G-ville at the end of the month for a wedding. You know my town in Tallahassee though. I really want to go back some time, but I don't really have a good enough excuse and it's not exactly right around the corner. Ah- college memories.
Oh, I know it.
I was a fan in my younger days! I wonder if I ever stopped in there while you were working, haha!

That sounds really fun! We usually go up a couple of times a year for football games. We miss it up there so much! If we have time we drive around a little bit or walk on campus and see our old spots.
I always love a good meal at The Swamp. And some Swamp juice..mmm. For lunch I reaally miss Roly Poly on 34th street. I also like Joe's Deli on 13th street bc I've been going there since i was a baby when it was located on University. I like Copper Monkey too on University, I think someone already posted that one. If Bistro1345 is still there that one is good. I heard Leonardo's closed but not sure if that is accurate.
Thanks again for all the suggestions, I'm going to check them out.
Wow, I had completely forgotten about Leonardo's! I remember going there back in the day. I remember walking there from campus! I just googled and seems they're still open
Kendra, hope you enjoy the wedding! Where in G-ville is it taking place?
Was there a second location to Leonardo's farther from campus? I feel like I've eaten there.
Do you and Jason have any places in G-ville that hold special meaning as a couple?
The wedding ceremony is at the Hippodrome and the reception is at Villa East. We're staying "downtown" too so it should be pretty nice. My mom, dad, and all three of my sisters are going to be there. I'm super excited since we're never all together in one place. My sister did give me a guilt trip though because I'm coming alone instead of bringing DD to play with her cousins. Personally I'm happy b/c I'm actually going to be able to enjoy myself without chasing my kids!
Omigosh, I'm all of a sudden getting really excited about this trip! I'm on urbanspoon, looking at all the Gainesville restaurants and having total nostalgia.
I used to get delivery a lot from this place on 34th called California Chicken Grill. It's in the shopping center with what used to be a KnK, now Sweetbay. I loved that place! Just saw it on urbanspoon.
Admittedly, as a silly undergrad kid, I mostly ventured out to chain restaurants on Archer when going to dinner with friends
I wish I'd had my more adventurous foodie streak back then!
I don't think so, just the one I believe.
Hmm, interesting question! When I think of G-ville, I mostly think of memories that don't involve Jason because we didn't meet til my junior year and since he lived in Tampa, we were long distance and I visited him in Tampa a lot. When he'd come to G-ville, we'd be lazy and not leave my apartment very much, lol. I think our main nostalgic place would be Rave, where I worked, funny as that sounds! When we first started dating, he surprised me by coming to town unannounced and walking into the store. Before he came into the store, he stood outside of it, looking in to make sure I was working. He made fun of me forever because he said that when he spotted me, and I don't know anyone was watching, I had this really sour look on my face like I was pisssed off at the world and didn't want to be there working. Only MH would actually find that attractive, haha. So when we go to Rave tomorrow, I'm sure he'll mention that.
Wow, how cool that it's at the Hippodrome!! I've only been there once, to see this really weird French movie that I dragged my roommates to during sophomore year. So many funny memories. But wow, that will be so neat. And yeah, it will be nice for you to get to enjoy yourself without the kids!
That is so funny about Rave. I have a lot of nostalgic memories with H since we starting dating at the end of freshman year (basically summer). We met for the first time at Grog House so that is "our bar" and when I would walk over to his dorm from my dorm, he would meet me at the crosswalk on Museum Rd. in front of Jennings (my dorm). He actually wanted to propose to me on that crosswalk but it was taking too long to plan a trip up to Gainesville so he ended up just popping the question here. We also shared our first dance (umm grinding type) at The Loft downtown, although I ditched him shortly after and we didn't start dating until 3-4 months later. lol.
I liked California Chicken Grill, too. My nail salon was in that plaza as well. You must have liked Roly Poly didn't you? How about Ballyhoo's, that is a good place. I also liked Gator's Dockside when it opened up, and Harry's in downtown which I'm not sure if it's there anymore.
Goodness, this post brings back memories! Shawna, I used to go to Loft all the time, and Grog House, too.
We usually took the Later Gator bus to either Loft or Alligator Rocks. I was also a Dockside fan when it opened, and I totally forgot about Ballyhoo's, yum. That's so cute your H wanted propose at your crosswalk, awww!
Bah! I want to go back!

Grog House was also where MH and I first danced together and got really drunk!
The Loft! OMG! My friends and I used to go there every Thursday night for a while. It was the best! (we thought back then anyway!)
Yeah I liked Roly Poly except one time I found something in my wrap so I never went back
And I also remember going to Gator's Dockside when it first opened! And I went to Harry's with my parents at some point.
Later Gator!!! Alligator Rocks!! Memory Overload.
There are two Leonardo's locations. One near campus and one in Millhopper. The one near campus is New York style, while the one in Millhopper is Chicago Style. They are both still open. I love Leonardo's. It was my parents old haunt when they were in school and I grew up on it
.
I can't wait to go back to Gainesville in April for the Spring game. We have season tickets to the games, but I didn't get to as many games as I usually do (my dad went in my place) because of the baby. This year I will get to go more, yay!
I love Oaks Mall. I like it better than a lot of the malls we have here. Have fun!

Just butting in to say that I love California Chicken Grill! My roommates and I had it delivered all the time! There was something about those potato wedges!! I'm sure the Gainesville location is just as yummy as Tallahassee's.
Have a fun trip!
MMM California chicken Grill in Tallahassee was amazing and the one time I had it in Gainesville it was just as good. Guess that is what happens when it is a chain.
