Hello All,
I am usually just a lurker, but thought I would see what you all thought of this. Tonight my DH and I went to the movies. We were all ready to enjoy a date night, kinda flirting and having fun chatting before the movie started. Then, these two guys about our age (28-30) came in and sat down. No big deal. Then just as the lights went down to start the previews, I look over and I see this big cloud of smoke coming from the one sitting a seat or two down from my DH. I was in shock! Is he smoking in the movie theater!!!? DH says to him, "Um I do not think you are suppose to smoke in here?" The guy goes, "oh its not real". It was an electronic cigarette. Both of these guys continued to smoke these "fake" cigarettes during the whole movie. Afterward, both DH and I were livid. DH even wanted to beat them up, which was actually kinda cute since he is not usually aggressive at all. Needless to say, I did not let him. We should have moved or reported them. Even though the cigarettes were fake, I am still pretty sure that it gave off a not so pleasant smell. So this brings a thought to my mind, is this still smoking or are people going to be able to do this in public places? Are non smokers going to have to fight for clean air all over again? What do you think? I realize that these might help some people stop or cut down on smoking, but still doesn't no smoking mean no smoking? What would you have done?
Re: Let's just light up in the movie theater...
Electronic cigarettes give off smoke? How is that possible? (serious question since I don't understand how that would work)
What would I have done? I would have gotten up and marched to the concession stand area and asked for the manager. I then would've questioned the manager on their policies (so that I would be informed of the rules of said theater) and then reported the two guys. Simple as that.
They don't give off smoke whatsoever. The "smoke" you see is water vapor, and it doesn't smell either. My brother in law's brother actually sells them so I've heard the whole spiel and seen them being used up close.
In knowing this information, I wouldn't have done anything because it doesn't impact me. For the record, I am a non-smoker.
Hmmm interesting and good to know. In that case, i wouldn't report them but if the "smoke" (ie: water vapor) was bothering me I would just get up and move to new seats in the theater.
My question is why someone would want to smoke an electric cigarette? That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
In any case FWIW, there is a bill up right now that would eliminate some of the smoking ban and allow businesses to decide for themselves whether to allow smoking, so yes, non-smokers may have to deal with it again.

My question goes one further... why would anyone want to smoke ANY cigarette? I guess I've never even felt the want to try one, so I don't have the answer to that question... But as for the e-cigs, I've been told there are many benefits that they have vs smoking a regular old cigarette... i/e. No tar (won't stain teeth/give you mouth cancer), it's not flammable, it can be smoked anywhere, no odors/second hand smoke, potentially cheaper than buying packs of regular cigarettes... I guess you can also get different flavor packs for them, as well as amount of nicotine or no nicotine, so you could essentially wean yourself off of smoking using the e-cigs. Plus, it would still give you the whole hand-to-mouth movement that seems to comfort smokers or something along those lines...
Regardless, I still don't understand when people say it tastes good (I can only imagine it to taste how it smells, which does not strike me as a flavor I want on my palate) or how people can knowingly put those harmful chemicals in their bodies. I'm not being judgey of those who do smoke, I'm just saying I don't get it.
I don't get it either. Yuck.

Out of curiosity, what theater was that at? My brother is a manager at a theater and they kick people out for anything that is distruptive now if people complain or if theater staff notices.
I would treat them as I would a real cigarette and not allow them.
