ipad

Does anybody use an ipad (or other tablet computer) instead of a laptop?

DH and I need to replace our laptop, which is currently on its last legs despite only being 3-ish years old.  We've decided to jump ship and go with a mac this time instead of our normal dell pc's that need to be replaced constantly.

Our problem?  The mac is so much more expensive than what we are used to.  We could buy two ipads for the cost of the laptop, and both get something new.

Will the ipad do most of the things we use our home laptop for?

-word processing (mostly googledocs at this point)
-internet (mostly gmail, facebook, nesting, and DH's espn)
-hulu
-viewing photos

Re: ipad

  • I do not have one but the lady I work for does. Ben wanted to buy a tablet to replace his laptop and then he played with hers and realized that it is fun but has its downside. This may sound super lazy but it is something to think about, it is not like a laptop where it can just sit in front of you. You have to hold it up and that can get tiring, especially if you plan on surfing for longer  than a few moments.

  • I have one and use it all day everyday. You can buy a cover that props it up and makes using it for long periods doable. However, it has not completely replaced my laptop. Nesting on it sucks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm not sure why. It may work for word processing, depends on how elaborate the documents you work on are. I use it for note-taking and simple pages. It does not work well at all for my research papers as you can't do any real formatting.

I would not recommend buying it to replace a laptop.

That being said, I LOVE it. I wake up in the morning, slide it to unlock and check my facebook and blogs in less time than it would take my laptop to power on. I keep all of my to-do lists for work and home on it. It's definitely helped me become nearly paperless. It's also amazing in the kitchen. Much better than a bulky laptop.

  • Also, the processor is slower than a normal laptop. Loading pages takes a bit longer. I have 3G and wireless.

  • I have both. The iPad is a good supplement to the laptop but not a replacement. Like Em said, nesting on it totally blows and the memory is no where near what a laptop would have.

I would say go and play with it at the Mac store and see what you think before you just go ahead and get one. PLUS you need to have some type of computer to sync it to iTunes which is essential for saving all your apps and everything else.

  • Everything they said :). I love mine but I only use it for an e-reader, interwebz and apps. It does not replace my laptop because of the word processing.

  • Ditto everything that everyone else said EXCEPT that about the word processing. While it doesn't come with a word processor, you can buy Apple Pages from the app store for $9 and it's AMAZING. I love it - every feature (and then some) as Pages for macbook/iMac's.

I could never use it as a replacement; only a supplement as the others mentioned.

Regarding price on MacBooks & iMacs, they are pricey, but they last soooo long. My newest MacBook, which I use as my primary computer, was purchased in 2008 and still runs like the first day I took it out of the box. I also have my Mac clam shell laptop from 2003 that runs just as well. My parents have went through 2 HP's and 3 Dell's in that time. I've even successfully converted Thomas (who works in IT, on Window's machines) in to a Mac guy - he won't have anything else in our house because he never has to work on them or fix them, lol.

I would check out the Apple Outlet or search for some of the Used Mac websites - you can get some really good deals on some of those, I've been told.

I will second this.  I purchased my Mac iBook in Spring of 2006.  It still works like new.  The only bad thing is that I can't run my iPhone 4 off of it because it requires the iTunes 10, which my iBook does not have the capability for.  Other than that, I have had ZERO problems.  To me, the main difference in a Mac and a PC is that it is a hellofa lot harder for Macs to catch a virus, therefore, they last a lot longer.

....once you go Mac, you never go back.

I have Pages too. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it kind of drives me crazy. I mean it works, I just feel like I can't do any type of formatting.
