Poll: Would you...

Would you get a tattoo knowing that someone you despise has a similar design?

Re: Poll: Would you...

  • If the tat meant something special to me ( which it would need to in order to get one to begin with) then I really wouldn't care who else had it. Is it the exact same one or just kind of like hers/his ? If it's the exact same one, I'd just make sure I put it in a different location.

  • Depends on the tattoo, also the placement.

My first thought would be to still get it. Would the despised person be around  to see it?

Probably not. It might remind me of that person.

    I agree.

  • It depends on the reasoning behind the tatoo. If it was a tatoo just for the sake of getting a tatoo - then no, I'd probably think of that person every time I saw it. If it was because of something that had meaning to me, sure!

  • And this is why I'm torn.

    The design is simple:

It's the Celtic motherhood knot.  Pretty straightforward.  Meaningful yet not unique.

I found it, and excitedly showed it to my sister.  "Yeah.... guess who else has that tattoo..."

It definitely wouldn't in the same place as this particular individual, but as Rach and DD said, I'm afraid any time I look at it, I'm going to think about this person, if only because I now know she has a similar tattoo.

And the gods only know how much she would let it go to her head should she come to find out I got the same tattoo as she... we would only see each other at mutual friends' events, if that, but she's narcissistic that wouldn't even matter.

    *le sigh*

If you really think you'll think about that person whenever you look at it, I might try to find something else that represents the same thing but isn't identical (hopefully that exists). But, if you think the reminder of that person will fade fairly soon, then go for it.

It would have been better if you never knew they had the same one! Then there would be no worries!

    This is so true...

And I know I'm prolly uber-overthinking this, but it just irks me that no matter how hard I try, this BSC individual still always seems to drive me insane!

If it were a necklace or something, then yeah, not something to worry too much about, but this is pretty permanent, so I think it's wise to be super sure before you go through with it.

  • Just a thought....why not hang a picture of it up in the house somewhere that you'll see a few times a day. See if it makes you think of the icky person after a few days/weeks....

    I like this idea.

Also, what if you personalize the motherhood knot somehow? Like write Sami's name in Celtic/Gaelic inside the knot or something? That way it's not identical.

Confused <--supposed to be a shrug

ETA: Forgot to put my answer to your question. I think if the tattoo has a specific meaning to me, then it wouldn't matter who had it, but if it was just "any" tattoo, I'd rethink my design.
