Teacher Alternative Certification
Have you completed a program or know someone who has? Is so, what was your experience like?
Re: Teacher Alternative Certification
I did it through a program at Laredo Community College. I recommend Community College or University programs instead of the "corporate" ones. It seems to me the ones who to a college program more easily pass the pedagogy test. It took a year for me. Depending on the certification you can actually teach while in the program. While I was going through it I was in a high need area and was able to teach while become certified. They even gave me a mentor that would come and observe me and give me feedback.
My experience was fine, very easy, just had to log so many hours. Although, right now may not be the best time to get certified
I went through iTeach Texas. I liked it because it was all online and it was self-paced so I could work on it when I had time (since I was still working full-time). I finished all the coursework at the beginning of February and am working on taking a few certification tests and the PPR.
I still need to do either an internship or clinical teaching. An internship is a full school year and is paid which would be ideal but I think those will be hard to come by because of the current budget deficits. Clinical teaching is one semester and is unpaid. Hopefully I will get one of these positions in the fall and after that and all my testing is completed I will be fully certified.
are the internships and/or clinical teaching the same as student teaching where you're working under the supervision of a current classroom teacher or are you the actual teacher?
