Moms - Eczema?

Maddy started about a month ago with her chin and mouth area being super dry. I, and her doctor, assumed it was from teething, etc., and I've been using aquaphor, lanolin, calendula cream, etc. to try to keep it clear. Sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't. But it didn't seem to be bothering her at all really.

Fast forward to this past week - I see super-dry reddish spots popping up on her, a couple on her belly/side, some near her armpit, some on her legs/behind her knees. Seems like eczema to me. I've been using Calendula Cream from California Baby on the spots but not much is changing. She's also been a little more prone to redness in the diaper area this past week too but she's teething like crazy so (poop warning!) her poop has been irritating to her too.

Nothing has changed in a week really, but she did start eating yogurt this past month. She has tried a few other new foods but not many, and no other real reactions to foods at all. Otherwise all detergents, soaps, lotions, etc., have been exactly the same.  I am ordering some CJs BUTTer today for use at daycare anyway and will order an extra bottle for home to see if that helps like many people rave.

If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it. Her next pedi visit isn't scheduled until May and I'm wondering if I should take her in before that to get her checked out.

Thanks ladies!

  • Kyle's going through the same, and had been since at least his 6mo appt. At his 9mo appt, the pedi didn't recommend anything beyond what you'd described as already doing. Wish I had more advice :(

  • Have you tried Aveno oatmeal soaks? I would be concerned about allergic reactions, specifically to detergents. What ski you use to was the babies clothes?

  • We use Rockin Green Cloth Diaper detergent, unscented, on all our laundry and have since October, so I don't think that's the cause of it all of a sudden. All soaps and lotions are hypo-allergenic, usually California Baby or natural, chemical free stuff that we've used for months. Nothing has changed in terms of detergent, soap, etc.

Same here at G's 9 month appt (When she was actually 10 months).

If it's really bad, they'll prescribe a steriod cream, but I didn't want to to that route.  I just try to put lotion on her cheeks every day - I've actually started using some of my face lotion on it, but I use eco-friendly lotion on myself so I don't worry about it.

It's the Yes to Tomatoes line (available at Target).  I pretty  much have to do it 1 or 2 times per day though or she gets red and dry again.

  • I just posted about this last week.  Emily Skin Soothers!  Tristan has had really bad eczema for a long time, to the point of cracking and bleeding.  Nothing was working.  My MIL works at a doctor's office and he suggested this stuff.

It's been a miracle!!!  His eczema is nearly gone.

http://www.emilyskinsoothers.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=181&zenid=e45lbvk5gmu24jb4586a1pmn41  This is specifically made for eczema.

http://www.emilyskinsoothers.com/stores.html Shows you where you can buy them near you.  Or, you can order from their site.

They also sell it in the store across the street from where I work so if you can't find it and really want it I'll pick some up and send it to you.

I'm telling you, the stuff is amazing!

  • Pam I totally forgot about your post - what would I do without you!!!!!

Thanks! I'm going to order some of that I think and see. Ben never had these issues so it's all new to me. He had plenty of diaper rash issues but that's so much better now with a little tea tree oil and cloth diapers. But m - ugh!

Thanks again ladies for all the suggestions!

  • I've been in contact with the guy who makes the stuff (he lives just a few cities over from me) and he said that if the regular skin soother doesn't work for some reason, then to try the diaper ointment believe it or not.  He's had a lot of customers/patients with severe eczema report great results with the diaper stuff after trying the regular soother to no avail.

However, he said those were extreme cases.  Overall, most people have fabulous results with the skin soother.  He's an herbologist and accupuncturist...basically, he's a dirty hippie!  HAHAHA!  But they usually make the best stuff.

I hope it works for you.  Poor baby!

  • thanks! I hope so too! I'm actually in RI next Friday so by the time I order it and it ships I can just pick it up - a store right near my mom's carries it! woohoo!

  • Looks like I am taking a trip to Whole Foods this week. My son's skin is getting worse. We too have done the whole shabang including steroids (which I use sparingly if any). Here is to hoping this one works!!!
  • As someone who had eczema pretty bad as a baby and young child, I do know that Eucerin or Moisturel cream was our route as far as lotion went, and Dove soap (white dove, none of the colored ones) was my course of action....I did have prescription creams though from time to time.

I'm worried J will get it too, it runs in families...ugh.  I just hope he doesn't get it as bad as I did!

  • First off, Robin...you are VERY pregnant according to your ticker!  HAAAA!

Second, I wanted to add...I've had one eczema patch my whole life on my arm.  When I bought the Emily stuff I started using it nightly on it and it's now gone.  So much so, that I can't tell where it was!!
