I totally forgot to tell you ladies my family drama. [may DD]

So, I appreciate all the T&Ps about my grandpa...but apparently, he didn't die last week. He flatlined, the hospital told my family he was dead, then they didn't come back out and tell them that he'd been revived. So we went for a good 12 hours thinking he was dead, when he really wasn't. Effing craziness. I feel like I'm living in a movie. My dad's pissed, the family's talking about filing some sort of malpractice suit [don't even know if they can]...it's a mess.

But now, he's in a coma and not responding - so this could still be the end for him. I'm probably going out there this weekend to go say good-bye and will go back when he actually passes away. I swear, that man keeps kicking.

So, thanks for the T&Ps...but it's not over yet. :P

  • What??? That's so bizarre. Not sure it's malpractice, but it is terrible communication.

  • That is SO crazy. I cannot believe they messed up like that.

So sorry you guys are going through this.

Um, yeah. I'm still not even sure how it happened, or what happened...it's all so confusing. And my family's so far removed from the whole situation that we don't know what to believe and what not to believe. It's a hot mess right now.

    I don't think it's malpractice, either...but...yeah.

  • What the hell?!??!!? That is so terrible, Eb. What a sad thing to go through.

I just ran the situation past senior management and they said it wasn't malpractice (just bad practice), but your family can sue for distress. If your dad had to pay to come back to the states they can include those costs in there.

Side note, this happened to a patient of our CNO when she was working at a teaching hospital in TN 30 some years ago and it happened on April 1st...so when she called the code the second time, everyone thought she was pulling an April Fools Day prank.

  • Thanks for that info Melissa. The more I run it through my head, the more bizarre it seems - I just keep thinking, "Does stuff like this really happen?" I think some people don't believe me, but it was ALL over my aunts and uncles' FB pages about it.

Luckily, we got the news before my dad booked his ridiculously expensive flight back to the States [and before we booked our last-minute airfare out there for the funeral, which would've been this weekend], so we're safe there. I don't know if they'll actually follow through with it until my grandpa either gets better [if that happens] or passes away, so we'll see. Honestly, I'm glad he's still around and that I'll get the chance to say good bye, even if he's not responsive.

  • Seriously.  WOW...  Crazy.

  • Yeah its not malpractice, but distress, pain and suffering, travel expense ( esp for your dad coming from the Middle East )

So - he wasn't dead, but told everyone he was - ? wtf.

So - he wasn't dead, but told everyone he was - ? wtf.

He flatlined, and I guess someone came out and told the family at the hospital [my grandma, aunt and uncle] that he had died. Then, no one came back out and told them that he'd been revived and put on a ventilator. My cousin figured it out when he called to ask for my grandpa's room and was patched through to someone who was in the room - who was not family. So no telling how long the fam knew he was still alive before they got a hold of my dad, but I got the call at 2am that he was still alive. I'd found out at 3:30pm that he was gone.

From what my dad said, my grandpa's still hanging on, but we're not sure for how long. I'm not sure anyone's left his bed side since this all went down. And, we just had a death in the family [cousin was murdered during a robbery], so it's been all sorts of fun on that side of the family.

  • Yeah, not malpractice, though no offense but I'd never trust a hospital's word on that - their job is to avoid liability. But whether you can sue for emotional distress depends on the laws in your state. If you need a referral, I know a great NJ lawyer who can, through his own networking, hook you up with someone good out thataway to see if there's any legal recourse.

This as well, that is so crazy. T&P Eb!

  • OMG!  How exactly does a hospital "forget" to tell a patient's family that he in fact did not die.  That's sort of an important detail.  WTH?

At the least, someone should be punched in the face.

Praying for your family during this difficult and confusing time!
