Developing outcome measures?

I recently applied for a job that I desperately want and in the job requirements it says it prefers "experience developing outcome measures." I have a bachelor's degree, but I have no idea what this means or how one gains experience in developing outcome measures. Can anyone explain to me what this means or provide examples of experience that would fall under this requirement?

Re: Developing outcome measures?

  • What kind of job is it? I'm assuming they mean something along the line of sales goals.
  • I do this for work.  It really depends on the the context but basically the questions to ask when developing outcomes measures are

    What are the objectives?  goals?

    What does success look like?

What is the metric within those goals?

    Are they qualitative or quantitative?

What are the units of measurement (continuous, categorical variable?)

What is the frequency in which they should be measured?  reported?

How will the data be gathered?  analyzed?  aggregated?

What are other companies with similar programs using for their outcomes measures (i.e. do some benchmarking)?

That's off the top of my head, anyway.

  • Thank you for the responses! The job is for a non-profit as a prevention specialist that deals with sexual assault education and prevention.

  • SunAndRain did a good job explaining it. Basically, they want to know if you have experience with strategic planning - can you set objectives and recognize what you'll need to achieve them and how you'll measure your progress.

  • Outcome measures is a generic grant term used in Federal grants to calculate how well the grant is doing to get the desired results.  It differs from performance measures in that performance measures focus on the activities performed while outcomes focuses on the results achieved.
