Anyone Moved Out-of-State Before??
I am so overwhelmed. DH leaves this weekend and I will be on my own for about 4 1/2 months until I join him in NYC. I have SO much to do, and I don't even know where to begin. We are working on selling a lot of our things. Some or the larger items are being posted on Craigslist, and I am hoping to have a big moving sale for the rest. I need to pack everything else. I need to replace the carpet in our house, re-do some things in one of our bathrooms, paint everything, find an apartment in NYC, sell DH's car, cancel our gym membership, etc.....the list goes on and on.
If you have moved accross the country before....or even to a different state, what was your process? What made it easier? What tips to you have? Anything you would advise against? I am just so lost
HELP!
Lots of love and continual explosions of babydust to my BG Besties! XOXOXOXO

Re: Anyone Moved Out-of-State Before??
I've only moved back and forth between MN and WI, so I probably can't be too much help.
But just make a whole list of things you need to do. Then you can cross them off as you complete them, and it'll help destress you a little, hopefully.
On the other hand, let me know if you've got any couches to sell
Good luck with everything! I get super stressed out just moving from Minneapolis to St Paul, so I can only imagine how much you've go on your mind.
Eat.Drink.BeMarried. Blog.
I've not moved out of state, but did just try Googleing "moving checklist" and got several hits that could be helpful. You can probably piece together several checklists to fit your needs.
I love checklists...
We just moved from Milwaukee. I moved first and DH followed about 2 months later. It sucked but you'll get through it.
I agree with pp about making a checklist. Since you have so long, you might want to organize your list by things you need to get done each month. That way you won't be stressed that, for example your bathroom isn't packed yet because it's on the list for another month,
Even though you have a lot on your mind, I would try spending at least one good night with your husband before he leaves.
Good luck with everything.
(Also in the market to buy a couch if you're selling.)
I packed up non-essentials right away just to get them out of my hair. I am also big on writing down EVERYTHING I put in a box so that I can find the right box again later if I need it.
Ditto making yourself a list - I find it really satisfying to check stuff off as its done.
Buy some packing tape and markers.
Tackle one room at a time and don't worry about the other ones until you're done.
ummm, thats all I've got right now. Good luck - what a fun and exciting (and stressful) time!
Oh, Lord. I've moved twice without my husband because he was in another state for an internship and then to different state too. So three times total without my husband to help. I just about lost my mind the first time.
Here's my best tips:
1. Sell everything you possibly can. We moved to Indiana with a VHS player and tapes because DH refused to let them go - we got to our apartment and said we still have too much stuff. Those went out the window pretty quickly.
2. Don't be afraid of take out, paper plates and plastic utensils. Pack what you can while you're in the mood.
3. Plastic storage bins are awesome, use a label maker or marker to tag them and then put what room they will go into eventually, not what room they are in now. If you don't have a dining room when you get there, you won't know where to put stuff.
4. Designate a suitcase for bringing with you. Put in there: phone charger, extra underwear, sweatshirt, pajamas, jeans and clothes for moving along with all of your toiletries and at least two pairs of shoes.
5. When it gets to the last day before you move, don't be afraid to throw out food. It's not like you'll be cooking a 5 course meal the night you move into your new place anyway.
6. Get wardrobe boxes for your clothes that are hanging in closets. Those have saved us so much space. You literally take the clothes out of the closet, hang them in the box, bring the box to the new place and hang them back up. AWESOME. I also threw my shoes into the bottom of the boxes.
7. Use dishtowels to wrap your plates. Easier than paper and you'll have all your dishtowels when you unpack.
I've had a full set of movers pack us up and move us, I've also packed everything and then had movers just move our stuff. I feel like a moving pro - when DH helped the last time, weird things got thrown into boxes and he totally messed up my organizing system so then he got put in charge of cleaning.
Pack up what you don't use and start now - it will make the process go much more smoothly.
Also, put books in SMALL BOXES, that way the boxes are light and easy to carry.
I have two couches to sell. Just sayin. email me for the info. dawnandnick0405 gmail
Pack a duffel bag or suitcase with several changes of clothes, important items (ie medictions, cell phone charger, etc), and important documents. Sell as much as you can. If needed, you can buy the items once you get there. Some of the stuff you have may not fit or work in your new place.
(am in the market for a dresser or folding bookcase/bookshelf)
Thank you all SO SO much, this is hugely helpful. I used to work at Starbucks so I am going to run over there today and see if they can save a bunch of coffee boxes for me for packing. I am going to start taking pictures of the bigger items to sell on Craigslist, but if people are interested, I can post them on here first.
I also bought labels to price out all the smaller stuff. I am hoping to have a yard sale in a couple of months once it is a bit warmer.
We were kind of thinking of reserving the size trailer we want, and then only taking what we can fit inside. I am seriously planning on getting rid of almost everything, except my clothes and some miscellaneous things that I really REALLY want to keep.
You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for helping me think through all of this. It is so overwhelming!

can you send a pic and price to elle330033@gmail.com?
Try the liquor store (for boxes, not liquor) too. They always have good size boxes for moving. I've also used Girl Scout cookie cases. They are a nice size for misc small stuff.
I was going to add that if you have any young, just starting out family or friends it's a great time to reach out to them and see if they are in need of things. When I moved in with DH I donated quite a bit of furniture, dishware, appliances to a few people. Speaking of donations, after the sale or potentially before think about donating to someplace local. You can generally write off some of the value with a receipt on next years taxes.
I had a bit f time to ponder my move so I decided each weekend I would tackle 1 room. I would get everything I could packed up that weekend. I took over my spare bedroom as box central. If you are planning a sale, collect everything that is going into it in one room/place. Set a different area as non-essentials that you plan on keeping but moving.
Based on all the packing I have to do, it might not be a bad idea to have the liquor as well.

Do you have any idea what kind of apartment your budget will allow you to have in NYC? Unless you've got a place to store momentos and things at your parents house, I'd almost suggest that you get a storage locker in Minnesota. My best friend stores a lot of her stuff that she doesn't want to throw/donate at her parents house. I'd also suggest really looking at the items you have and what you use and need. Example: I have a full set of pots and pans, but there is no way I could fit them in a NYC kitchen (in our budget) so I'd only bring a few key pieces that would get me through most cooking.
Also.. I just realized that Sarah is subletting her apartment in Brooklyn for June & July - should I send you info?

Hey!
Will both of you email me pics (or CL links!) of the couches too?

I've moved to new state 3 times!
I moved to MN about a year after my now husband (then boyfriend then FI) moved to MN.
Make a checklist of everything that needs done and just plow through it. I basically moved my entire house + my then-fiance's entire apt, as everything in his apt came to my house when he sold his place. (He came up here a year before me.)
I was also planning our wedding at the same time and it was WAY stressful, but it can be done.
Get rid of more than you think you need to get rid of. Craigslist is your friend! I sat in a camping chair and watched a TV on the floor, is what I'm saying!
