For the parents out there...

Ok so my sister in law's sister is throwing her (my SIL) a baby shower in a month...its her second child and its a boy this time...clearly they have all the "big" stuff and I'd rather not buy clothes because I know they'll get a ton.  I'm wondering what items you ladies have and LOVE as moms - or something you've always wanted.

I love the idea of it being some sort of "splurge" item that she normally wouldn't buy - in other words, not necessary but totally awesome to have - I'd like to keep it under 100, but am having trouble coming up with ideas.

The only idea I have so far is the Maya Wrap (https://www.mayawrap.com/) - I figured it would be like having an extra set of hands since she'll have 2 little ones now.  I'd love your feedback, and some additional ideas :)  Thanks!

  • That is cute!

I don't have much advice to offer, but... isn't it 'taboo' to throw a shower for the 2nd baby?  That seems weird to me, for all the reasons you already mentioned... they've already got all the big stuff they need?

It totally is - but apparently its acceptable if the second child is of the opposite sex of the first.  Since her first was a girl, and now she's having a boy - I guess her sister decided she wanted to throw it, and she didnt object.

I definitely side-eyed it when I heard about it because they were complaining when another friend of ours had a second shower, and in turn didnt go (she had 2 boys, and had a shower for each).  I'm not saying I'm all for it, but since the baby will be my nephew I feel like I should get something.

  • I actually just went to a baby shower yesterday for a second baby (they already have a boy and are having a girl).  But actually the hostess called it a "party" instead of a shower and asked for no gifts.  The new mom is a really close friend, so I had gotten her stuff anyway, including some stuff from India and some favorite books from childhood for her son (I told him he can read to his new sister).

One of my friends had a pouch and she loved it!  It looked kind of like this one, but was more of a sling:

She said it really helped to get things done, especially after her second baby, because it left her hands free and the baby comfortably held.  The Maya wrap has the hanging part that I think would be obstructive for some people.

  • I'm not a fan of showers for second babies, different sex or not, unless it is a super small 'sprinkle' shower with just close family or something - or the no gift thing like temurlang said.

otherwise Linds I like what you are thinking. Also what about something for the big brother?

  • http://www.mobywrap.com/ the moby wrap is also a nice wrap to get since it can be worn several different ways and easy to wash. Im a nanny and all the mom's have one :) What about some really nice organic products for mom and baby? or depending how old the 1st child is...the Angel care monitor system is one of the best. It's super hard to come up with ideas too!

  • Thanks Ladies - Manda, I will def get something for the big sister too :)  It could very well be just a family shower - not sure who all is on the guest list.  I just figured I would buy something whether they had a shower or not, so I may as well just give it as a "shower gift".

Kareevan - I'll def check out the moby wrap.  They already have a monitor so I'll probably skip that but I am loving these ideas.  Thanks ladies!
