Babysitting rates

I am not sure if this is the right board, but I figured I'd try. I offered to do some babysitting for a couple who want to do a "date night" once a month. They have 2 children, a 2 yo and a 7 yo. I would have to drive 20 minutes to get to their house and they would be gone for 3-4 hours. How much should I charge them per hour? Or, how much do you pay your babysitter? Thanks.

Re: Babysitting rates

  • I am in my twenties and married and was a nanny about a year ago.  I made $15/hour (cash only) for one 8yo.  If they want to spend $10 or less an hour for a date night then they should find a grammar/high school girl and have the hassle of picking them up and staying sober enough to drive them home.  Its not worth your time for less than $50.

  • You need to look around YOUR area and see what the going rate an hour is. For we we are its a little higher just because its harder to get a sitter. Some areas is lower.  If I used the on post service (during the day service) its only 4.50 an hour.

Just do your research for your area.

  • Honestly, I usually just let them decide.  I've gotten anywhere from $40 - $120 for an evening.  I enjoy children, so it isnt a bother.  Although, since I've gotten married and gotten sick, I haven't babysat in awhile.

  • The lady I baby sat for paid be $10/hour. With that being said, she usually threw in more so it was probably more likt $15/hour. She had a 3 yo and a 6 yo. I also took the older girl to karate class. I think it really just depends on your area. Look on care. com to see if you can find any rates in your area.

  • I used to babysit a lot for people in college and the average that I was paid (I never asked) was $10/hour or like a PP mentioned usually more for two kids.  I really think with a 2 and a 7 year old $15/hour is fair.  You'll have to be down on the floor and interactive and one is still really young, so I would go for $15.

  • It also depends on the area. I see you are in Cali, so I would not take less than $15 an hour for those 2 kids.

Prior to moving here, I baby sat all of the time and made really good money. There were times I would make over $100 babysitting for 2 different families on the weekends. I would love to still babysit now, but all of the kids is my preschool class either have older siblings or they already have a sitter.
