Name change

So I finally changed my name somewhere official last Friday (up until then the only place I've changed it is facebook, my email sig, and netflix).  I waited an hour at the social security office to add DH's name to mine (I decided months ago when I got marriage license to hyphenate).  I think I may wait to update my license though as I'm moving to NY from MI in late April/early May and don't want to pay to update my MI license when I'll have to get a NY one so soon.  I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem when we go to close on our house because I've used my married name on all my house & mortgage paperwork, but my photo id will have my maiden name?  Also curious if I'm the last one on here to get around to changing my name, or if there are any other procrastinators?

Re: Name change

  • I live in a different country, so the rules are likely different, but in the process of buying our house, I've only had to show our marriage certificate a couple of times to prove old and new name.  no big deal though.

  • So maybe I'll be fine if I bring my marriage certificate along when I close.  Just noticed in your siggy that you are closing in a week, how exciting!  I just fedex-ed our mortgage paperwork back today and if all goes well we want to close on or around 4/15.

  • I think you would be okay w/marriage certificate.  On anything I don't have changed (or before it got changed) the marriage certificate was enough for whomever needed verification.

  • Ditto to procrastinating here as well ;)  DH is pushing for it, but I told him since we plan to travel abroad later this year, I don't want to contend with new passport, etc until we return.

  • I don't know.  There's SO MUCH random shizz that can go wrong at the LAST MINUTE with house buying, that I personally would not take the chance.  Just to be on the safe side.  But I am totally a paranoid freak about that kind of stuff.  I always assume the worst.  lol

  • I don't know the answer to your question, but I am also a procrastinator! I finally went to the DMV in early January. I still haven't gotten my license yet, though   >:(

FYI - I don't know about MI, but in GA there was no charge to change my name on my license. I would call the DMV and see if there will be a charge... Also, the name change did not count as a renewal (possibly the reason for it being free?) so I still have to get it renewed next year.

  • In response to Megan's response, in IL I had to pay to get a new license w/my married name on it.  It varies by State.

As for closing, I'd bring your marriage certificate and by then you should also have your new SS card, so bring that too just incase.

  • I had to pay $25 here in FL for my name/address change at the DMV.  I also paid $500 to have my first name legally changed and went through additional headaches of getting all that done.  But, my name is now perfect and I'm never doing that again!

  • Procrastinating on some things but did the ss card and license within a month. Drivers license in Texas costs $11 for name change or lost license.  Work badge took a lot longer. Still have passports to go - personal and work. Cashed in all my travelers checks since my name/signature is changing. Wondering about my savings bonds issue in my maiden name. I am sure more things to change will crop up.
  • I've changed mine legally, but have yet to get it all changed over. I lucked out with my driver's license...mine was expiring anyway. I still need to go to the bank and change it on my credit cards. I also need to change it on my car loan. That's about it.
  • I haven't even started the process yet.  I wanted to wait until after the new year to change my name.  Well then I couldn't find the paper nor the time needed to go to the SS office.  Then last week I purchased a ticket to Alaska and did not want a hassle at the airport so I will wait until after my trip to change my name.
