My mom is back at my house....

They discharged her this morning from the hospital with a TLSO brace (thing is huge and NOT comfortable). When she moves she has a ton of pain, and that causes her to throw up. Switched her from Percocet to Vicodin to come home w/ the hopes it will make her less nauseous too.

This is so hard. She is in SO much pain. I'm guessing she'll be here in MN with us for the week, then we'll see about her flying out of here maybe next weekend. Jerred was supposed to go to NY tues night through Thursday night but I asked him to cancel b/c I just can't handle 2 kids and my mom alone. But I know he needs to be there so I hope his work isn't too pissed off. And he's supposed to go June 7 for the whole week - I will have to call in reinforcements for that week then.

Why did I move to this friggin state? If I hadn't, my mom wouldn't have been here alone for a week to help me b/c I would live so much closer and she could pop down for a short weekend, etc.

Ugh. I have to set alarms for mom's pain medication every 4 hours, nurse my newborn.... help my mom to the bathroom .... how is one supposed to do all this???? Jerred can help somewhat, and he is a HUGE help with Ben, but he can't nurse maddy (she'll take a bottle so maybe for once that will settle her at night although it usually requires nursing her to get her to fully sleep).... I'm so scared and overwhelmed. I'm just hoping to survive each day and hope that my mom starts to feel better with each day. Right now she doesn't look good at all 24 hours after the injury... hoping 48 and 72 hours brings more relief.

Any good vibes you guys can keep sending our way are appreciated!

  • HUGS HUGS HUGS honey! UGH! Take it one day at a time and I hop your mom can get a little more comfortable...Tons of extra vibes heading your way!
  • thanks ladies. It's just so hard to see her in so much pain. I've been reading up on it a lot online tonight and she's in for a rough road. i think she'll be here all week this week and then maybe she'll be ready for a flight home.

I hope that Madeleine and my mom's medication schedule works out together tonight for sure. I envision some naps being taken this week while Ben is at daycare when my mom and maddy sleep....

Ok - have to try to eat dinner finally at 8:45pm before my mom needs more meds in like 20 minutes.

  • aww poor mom. ya those braces suck. so big. did they give her any muscle relaxers? the more she moves the better she will feel and its better for her overall. I know it hurts but laying down for long periods of time isnt good. Hope she feels better soon!!

  • Kelly - she's actually on bed rest b/c of the fracture - so while she also hurt muscles right now she needs to keep the back immobilized as much possible for the fracture to heal. No muscle relaxers for her though I bet they would help b/c I think she pulled a bunch when she fell in addition to the fracture. It's a TLSO brace so it's miserably uncomfortable to be in but necessary.

I just want her to be able to get home - I know she wants to be home, my dad is feeling so helpless, and I want her to get to her doctor and a good ortho doc back home so she can get a custom brace that will be more comfortable.

  • I know this if going to sound strange but try applying ice over the brace. It will numb the areas where she has pain. I do this got my patients at work.

  • I muct have missed the previous post about your mom.  I hope she is doing much better now and you have gotten into some sort of a doable routine.  I can only imagine how overwhelmed you are.  You are in my thoughts and I am sending your mom (and you) tons of good/get well vibes!!
  • The original post (and this one too) was from May 2010. Her mom is doing much better now!
