It's a Family Affair

How many siblings do you have or are you an only child?  Where do you stand, oldest, youngest, middle child?  Do you wish you had another sibling?

I only have one brother.  I'm the oldest and he is two years younger than me.  I like being the oldest, but I always had to take care of my brother and boy what he freaking spoiled.

I always wish I had a sister.  I actually may have a half sister out there but that's a whole other story.

Re: It's a Family Affair

  • Im the oldest! I have 2 younger brothers one by 2 years (our bdays are 2 days apart) and one thats 7 years younger. I am adopted as is my oldest younger brother, two totally different adoptions and I think it's pretty rad how our birthdays turned out!

I liked being daddy's only girl and I love my brothers so nope Im good right where Im at!

  • I have a younger brother (7 years). I love him to death, but his birth made my life hell. I've always known it wasn't his fault.

Interestingly, my parents had the opportunity to adopt 7 kids in all, but the 6 other adoptions (both before and after mine) didn't work out. I only know for sure that the two they were going to adopt after me both died shortly after birth. I always wonder what it would have been like to have so many siblings. I think if there were more of us, it would have made my mother's behavior more apparent.

Had a dream I was queen.
    Woke up. Still queen.
  • I have one brother. I am the oldest. I wish I did have another sibling.  I love my brother and wouldn't change having him in my life. he has taught me so much in life.

Why I wish I had another sibling is because has special need (Down syndrome) so when my dad get older it will be all on me to deal with stuff. When my dad is gone or unable to take care for my brother it will be on H and I to take care of him. We both know that at one point in our lives my brother will be living with us. I just wish I had someone else (a sibling) to kinda of help out at that point.

  • I have two sisters. Three girls in 4 years so we're all really close in age. I'm in the middle. I never went through the middle child syndrome. My sisters would actually (and do) tell you I'm the most spoiled. I don't see it. If I wanted to do something, I'd ask and if my parent's said yes then yay!

None of us were really prissy growing up and we always helped my dad with whatever...fixing stuff around the house, etc. I always cut the grass while I lived there. If anything, you can tell my younger sister is definitely the baby but that's about it.

  • I have two half sisters and three half brothers. My dad's ex-wife also had a daughter and son before they were married so they are kind of step siblings to me, but we have lost contact.

They are 9, 17, 18, 23, 25 years older than me. I was raised pretty much as an only child.

I have three nieces (currently 13 and 14) and three nephews (currently 16, 16, and 18). I had a nephew who was killed in an accident when we were in middle school, he would have been 23.

ETA: I forgot a niece! Oops. She is currently 21.

  • I'm an only child.
That wasn't the plan, but long story short both my parents were on some prescriptive drugs that made then sterile.  Because of all my Dad's health issues they didn't want to adopt and put another child through having to deal w/ my Dad's health issues.  Because of everything my Mom and I went through together w/ my Dad's health we're definitely best friends and more like sisters now that I'm an adult.

My Mom is engaged and whenever they get married I will have 3 step siblings and 1 step nephew...they aren't close w/ their father so I won't really get to have much of a relationship w/ them, which makes me sad.

  • My story is complicated. I am an only child with my parents, they divorced when I was five, then each remarried before I turned ten. Then siblings came along. My mom and stepdad had my brother a month after I turned ten, then my dad and stepmom had my sister seven months later. Then, my mom and stepdad had my sister when I was 12, than my littlest sister was born to my dad and stepmom just after my 13th birthday. I got four siblings (two at each house) in 3 YEARS. Nuts. So, all half siblings, and the oldest is still a junior in high school. I got s lot of baby practice, but sometimes I wish for siblings closer to my age.

Wow, you guys have interesting stories!  I love to hear about this stuff.

I have only 1 sibling, an older (4 years) sister.  We generally get along when we actually talk, but don't really see each other that often.  She lives about 3 hours away from me.  My parents had a very hard time getting pregnant, so for a while there it looked like it would just be my sister.  My mom says that she only got pg with my sister when she gave up and applied to adopt.

  • I have an older brother that I lurve to death.  We were like peas and carrots growing up, there's nothing he wouldn't do for me and vice versa.

I have at least 13 half siblings that I've never met.  My dad is/was a fvckwad and slept around a lot.  When I was about 7, there were 13 halves, so I'm sure by now there's more.

I used to beg my mom for a little brother or sister and she thought about adopting some girls from China but it never panned out.  Ironically, our extended family has about 6 Chinese girls now that have been adopted.  Love it!

I can relate.  As the oldest I've had to be the mother at times, when my mother was not around.  Now that her health is going down hill I've been the one to step up and change her bandages, take her to appointments, etc.  As the only daughter I've been the one to do these things.  It may be a cultural thing, but the daughters always take care of their parents when they get old.

this was us as well!  my parents were told they could never have kids.  then they adopted a little boy and had him for A YEAR.  this was way back in the day before adoption laws were really formed.  after a year, his birth parents asked him him back and they had to return him!  it was on that trip that they found out they were pregnant with me, and then once i was born, there was no stopping them and along came tia!

That is heartbreaking!  What a way to soften the blow, though, in finding out they were pg with you.  Smile

  • I have one sister, she's 3 years younger. When our mom gets remarried, we'll have 2 step-brothers. But since we're all in our 20's and early 30's it doesn't feel like a step-family; not super close with the soon-to-be step-brothers. My mom lives in WI while my sister and I live in CA.

H has 3 brothers, he's the youngest. His two older brothers are exactly 10 months apart . His parents had 4 kids in a 5 year span.

  • I'm the oldest.  My sisters are 3 years younger than me (twins).  They got a lot more attention than me early on, because there were two of them and my parents had only been expecting one.  They didn't know they were getting twins until the delivery!

Growing up we got along well for the most part.  It was rough because they always had each other, and then I was the third wheel.  It used to cause problems when my parents would let me bring a friend along.  Even now, I'm sometimes jealous of how close they are to each other.

I have always wanted an older brother.

  • My sister is 15 (almost 16) years younger than me; there's no one between us. I asked for 12 years for a sibling before I got one. Now that I have her...I don't know. It's weird being so far apart. I don't think we really know anything about each other, especially because I left the house when I was pregnant and then I moved back in for only 2 years. And then my daughter is only 2 years younger than her, so they're almost like cousins.
  • I have one older brother (2 years older than me). He is my life! We talk atleast two times everyday. He now lives in Houston, which is about 3.5 hours away from me so that sucksbig time,  but he comes in once every two months or so. It was always me and him growing up and we only had eachother most of the time. I never wanted or want another sibling.

  • I am the the oldest and have one younger sister who is 19.  We're five years apart. Love her to death but our personalities are completely different.  Sometimes we have to work to get along but we're best friends and are always there for each other.

No real story to report there except I know my parents would have liked to have one more kid in between us but it wasn't in the cards.  I personally always thought it would be cool to have an older brother.

The real interesting story is with my mom's parents.  Her parents had her and three other sisters together.  One is older than her, two are younger.  They would have had a brother but he was miscarried.  Her parents (my grandparents) then got divorced and both remarried.  My grandfather married a woman about the same age as my mother and had one more daughter with her.  So I have a half aunt who is 18 years old - younger than my sister.  She recently had a baby of her own at 18.  My grandfather passed away and my mom doesn't speak to her or her mother (long story).  She requested me as a friend on facebook not too long ago and I am debating how much contact I want to have with her.....
