Fed Govt - Qualified but not selected for interview

I have applied to a few federal government jobs.  Each required the standardized questionnaires.  A few weeks later I generally get the e-mail telling me that I qualify for the position but am not being selected for an interview.  Any insight as to why I am not being selected for interviews/how I can better my chances for being interviewed?

I am mostly applying to positions I qualify for based on a combination of my education and experience.

Re: Fed Govt - Qualified but not selected for interview

  • I would think that they've got so many applicants per job that unless your last position was pretty much exactly the job they're hiring for, then they move on.
  • usually internal candidates are given priority.  just keep trying.
  • I'm guessing that there are just people who are more qualified. For example, we're hiring for a position right now that requires a master's degree, but if someone with a PhD is willing to do the job for the same price, we would interview them first.
  • Also it could be that the jobs are being pulled. We were just about to post a few jobs and they put the hiring freeze in. My guess is a lot of jobs got pulled based on that.

I'm sure that isn't the only reason, but it could be one.

  • Most of the time they give consideration to veterans first and then they file those that are qualified. It is hard these days because there are so many vets who will get put on the list first and then there are the ones internally and then they consider outside. keep trying it took me a while as well. Good luck to you!
  • Thanks for all the helpful advice and insight.  I'll keep trying!
  • Many agencies will only interview the top x candidates.  Our office (federal) limits it to the top 5.  For the last position, 37 people made the qualified list. There was 147 applications for one GS-7 job.

This. My friend worked for pennies in the gov't for about 4 year before finally getting a permanent position because they always interviewed LESS qualified vets before qualified non-vets. Keep trying!

  • This is how my office is, granted I work for my local county, but they only interview the top 10 ppl who pass a standardized test. They do move those who pass up the list though, so if a candidate is #15, after they interview, and hire or pass on the first 5 candidates, the person at #15 is bumped up to #10, thereby eligible for an interview.
