DH went to go see his grandmother the othe day. She is 96 years old and lives in a retirement home. She has always been completely 'with it'. Well, she caught pneumonia last September and thought that was going to be it. She rebounded and is still hanging on but has now deterioriated quite a bit in the last week or so and pretty much sleeps all the time, is skin and bones and sometimes doesn't know who is visiting her.
Well, DH is her favourite and she requested him to come and see her on Friday. She knew who he was and they spent quite a while talking. Since I couldn't go with him I wanted him to make sure to tell her I said hi and to send my love. She knew my grandma and I think she's a wonderful woman and was SO excited that she made it out to our wedding ceremony since she was 94 at the time and rarely left the home because she had to use Handitransit and doesn't get around very well.
DH said she knew who I was in their conversations and she told him how lucky he was to have me. It brought tears to my eyes. She described me as 'one in a thousand'. LOL! Nice odds - I think I know what she meant. But now I joke to DH that I'm the lucky one. All he had to do was go to a stadium with a few thousand woman and find someone comparable or better.
Sorry this was so long, but I just had to share.
Re: lol-worthy compliment
That is so sweet. I would be flattered as well. I wish my grandmother remembered things.
My gram just turned 90, and of course can not remember a whole lot. It really is sad. She remembers a lot from the past, (when my sister and I were little). She doesn't remember my wedding nor DH. Mind you DH and I dated for a few years when we were a lot younger, but she still doesn't remember him. Now, I always have to reintroduce my boys to gram every time I see her.
Kat - I'm so sorry. That must be so hard. Yeah, Grandma T she has been sharp as a tac until now.
We are very fortunate in this repect. DHs other grandma is 84, still lives on her own and is with it. For her birthday in November, we were over at her house and she offered me wine (she still drinks LOTS of wine) and I declined because I don't drink wine. She insisted because 'I only turn 84 once, you're going to deny an 84 year old?' I had to drink!
My Dad's parents are both in their 80s and on their own. They are both starting to decline physically a little bit but still know what's going on.
