east coasters a q4u

Where is the best place to go to see lighthouses and eat insane amounts of lobster?  MIL has never been out of CO and wants to see lighthouses.  DH and I want to tear into some east coast food (mainly lobster, but we want it all  haha). Last year she has 3 breast cancer surgeries and things are finally looking up for her.  We promised her we'd trade our timeshare and take her where she would want to go when she was up to it.  Well shes up to it.  Also, whats the best time of year to get good prices, and not fight crowds?  We'll have the baby, so early summer is out, but anytime after that, or even pushing it to next spring works too.

  • Maine.  I wouldn't go during the summer.  I'd go as early in the fall as you can (2nd week of Sept maybe) so you'll still have fairly nice weather but beat the crowds.

  • We have alot of lighthouses around here since the Outer Banks is a random strip of sand in the middle of the ocean.. and we have tons of fresh seafood, but not so much lobster. I think I'd suggest going up north for that. Maine is the first thing that came to my head. I know they have lighthouses too.

Ditto this.  My family used to own a camp in Owl's Head, ME which is across the bay from Rockland and not far from Camden.  I loved going there.  Unfortunately my Grandparents sold the camp several years ago, it's one of my goals to buy it back some day so it's back in the family considering it had been built by my Great Grandfather and it belongs in our family.

  • I'm partial to Nantucket or Newport but Cape Cod is probably a good choice too. Expect to pay more and more crowds during the summer months though.

We do Nantucket every year in October, and the crowds have usually thinned out but the weather is kind of hit or miss. Some years it's still really warm but some years it's sweatshirt weather and colder. However, we pay a lot less and still enjoy the sites and surroundings.

ETA: Bar Harbor, ME is also pretty fantastic!

  • What a wonderful thing to do for her!  Not sure about lighthouses. Jill's the pro on here. For timeframe I would recommend Sept-October and May-June. Shellfish is in season in the Fall. Maine has several lighthouses and the seafood is to-die-for fresh. Rockport, Bar Harbor, Old Orchard, ME are gorgous areas for both.

So glad to hear she is feeling better!

  • I would say Cape Cod or somewhere along the coast in Maine, but yeah.... this one's for Jill.

Nantucket is one of my faaaaaavorite vacation spots ever, but there's only 1 lighthouse I can think of.

  • I can think of 3...Great Point, Brant Point and Sankaty....I don't know if all 3 are ones you can go up and tour, but they're there! And you could throw in the Martha's Vineyard ones too if they did a day trip or something?

  • Maine or Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard for the lighthouses.  My favorite lighthouse is Nubble Light in York, ME which is approx. an hour from Boston. Rhode Island also has a decent amount of lighthouses which aren't too far outside the Boston area.

How long are you planning to stay for? I would say you could probably visit tons of lighthouses in the North East over a 4 day time frame (one day for ME, one day for Cape Cod, another for Martha's Vineyard and a 4th day for RI).  If you were to do this - I would suggest staying right outside of Boston because it will be more cost effective and within a reasonable distance from all of the locations.

I'm not a lobster fan but I'd say Maine for that as well.

I would definitely suggest coming in the early fall, right after Labor Day would be perfect.

I believe the Boston Harbor also does a lighthouse cruise.  People have mentioned it to me before but it's been a while since I've looked into it.

Let me know if you want any more info, as you know - I'm slightly lighthouse obsessed - and I've been meaning to take a lighthouse excursion, so helping you would probably get me in gear to plan my own trip.  Feel free to email me jillmariesabin at gmail

  • pretty much ditto everyone else. ME is great in the fall when not a lot of people are around, but if you go later, like October, even though it's chilly it's still nice, except many of the more casual lobster shack places (which is where it's better to get lobster, don't go anywhere fancy) close after the summer season.

My favorite places in ME are in the Ogunquit/York area, right over the NH border, but I don't recall seeing lighthouses there. If you go to ME, I'd recommend renting  a car and driving up the coast, it's pretty, and I assume you'd find lighthouses not too far from there.

    Or else Cape Cod.

If you want to go to CT, go to Old Saybrook and eat at Abbotts. Lighthouses near there are: 2 in Saybrook, a few in New London (maybe 30-40 min east), one in Guilford (2 towns over to the west), some in New Haven (a few towns past Guilford), one in Groton (next to New London, and that area is nice to visit anyway, the Coast Guard Academy is there and there's a lovely aquarium and historic fishing/shipping outdoor museum thing). The CT shore doesn't get too busy, so pretty much any time spring/summer/fall is good to visit there.

Oh if you want to do timeshare to stay, stay at Water's Edge. That's where my parents own, they're in II and RCI and it's a really nice resort/spa in Westbrook (just west of Old Saybrook). I can recommend a lot more if you decide to go to CT. But there are nice timeshares in ME and on the cape, too.

  • The only things I can add are that the lobster will be good pretty much anywhere along the NE coast, and if you go to Maine, even in the summer months, don't expect to do a lot of swimming. That water is COLD!

And I vote for Nobska Lighthouse in Woods Hole. Cute and great views.

  • I've never been to Maine but it looks beautiful!

A place that I have been to in the Summer that had a fair share of lighthouses and a decent beach was Cape Cod.

But, if I were to go back to New England, I would skip the light houses and go to Newport, RI. I love the old houses there!
