Sympathy Gift Poll - Clicky

My 17 year old cousin died in a car accident last night, I want to send something to my Uncle and other cousins, but I'm not sure what to send.  (they are in another state so it will have to be something from a delivery service)  Please help.[Poll]

Re: Sympathy Gift Poll - Clicky

  • Wow, so, so sorry for your loss. I chose flowers as a sympathy gift mostly because at least when I am really upset, I can't even think about eating. So a meaningful card and flowers would be my top choice.

     Edited: for grammatical errors!

  • I'm going to be really unhelpful (but honest) here:  if you have a close relationship with them, what they really want is for you to mail them a card now and call them in a week.  If you aren't that close they don't want the call.  I genuinely appreciated all the cards I got I was glad to talk with certain close relatives.  The other 90 phone calls -- totally painful and not at all supportive.

Although I agree with Zara that they probably don't want to eat at all, I'd still go with the food basket if you really feel you must send something.  Lots of people will send flowers and they just take up space and remind you that you're sad.   People brought my dad food and it was much appreciated.  Is there a grocery or restaurant in their area that you could have deliver them a prepared dinner?

  • I say a plant with a thoughtful card. My father passed away a few years ago and I still have the plants that were given to me after his passing. I have had these plants for over 9 years and I cherish them.

  • Oh, Linds. I'm so so sorry.

I've never been in this situation, but I agree with PPs.  Send a plant instead?  Or figure out how to send them food maybe.

Otherwise, just send a card, give it some time, and call.

Was your cousin interested/involved in anything special? Could you make a donation to that instead?

  • I'm so sorry!! How terrible.

I agree with temur: find out how you can get them a meal delivered. This may be difficult to arrange, though, without calling them and finding out if they already are having a meal delivered that evening...  And, along with temur, I don't know if they are ready for a conversation over the phone.

Not sure how appreciated a fruit or food basket would be. If it were me, I wouldn't touch that, but would certainly appreciate a warm meal.

  • I am so sorry for your loss :(

I said other... because I'm becoming a fan of donating to charities in the deceased person's name.  Find something relevant to your cousin.  If there's something your cousin was passionate about, or involved in, or something like that, then that would be perfect.

If the charity thing doesn't fit, then I'd say a plant as a backup, because they last a while compared to flowers.

  • I think Tem had really good advice. I'm sorry for your family's loss!

  • Thanks ladies - I'm not sure what kind of activities or things he was "in to" so I'm not sure where I would go with that.  Also I'd really like to do something for the family that is mourning more so.  I talked to my dad and he suggested sending a honeybaked ham since it could serve as a main dish for a meal, be sliced for sandwiches and overall take stress off the family having to prepare meals.  I'm going to send a honeybaked ham with my brothers because they are able to go attend the funeral.  Unfortunately I'm not able to take 3 days off to attend.

Thanks again for your help - I'm still sort of in shock about the whole thing, he was such a sweet kid.

  • Great choice Linds.

It is a shocking and horrible situation. I feel for you and my thoughts are with the family.
