NFM: Teenage Neighbor Issues

This isn't a FM issue, but eh what the heck...

My neighborhood is your typical suburbia, lots of kids, playground, etc. Moved in 6 years ago, and have loved it. Love our neighbors...well...except for one across the street from us. They're not the friendliest people, per se, but they're not offensive either. Their 18 year old son clearly has some issues. He seemed harmless, raked our leaves, although he did a crappy job at it. I'd say over the past year or so, we've seen the cops at their house. This past weekend, saw them there again. So I did my snooping, and turns out, the son was arrested a few years ago for drug possession and distribution. I guess if i didn't have a kid to worry about, and if the neighborhood wasn't rampant with kids, i wouldn't be as upset about this as i am. Clearly, i can't "do" anything about this...what am i going to do, tell them to move? Of course not.

Would you mention this to your other neighbors? Or would you just keep it to yourself? I don't want to be the neighboood gossip, but frankly, having a drug dealer living across the street from me doesn't give me warm and fuzzies.

Re: NFM: Teenage Neighbor Issues

  • MYOB.

I am sure that your neighbors have seen the police cars as well.  Since you don't know all of the details of his arrest, I would not mention it to the neighbors.  You could look foolish (if the charges are false) or like a busybody (no matter how it all shakes out.

The cops have him on their radar.  They aren't going to let him get away with much.  They are going to want to catch him a second time and seal his fate.

Now, if you start to see a lot of kids coming and going from the house, you can alert the cops and they can start watching him...

Good advice. Thank you very much!

I'll just keep my yap shut and peek through the windows like my little old neighbor does! Wink

  • So, he was 16 when he got arrested?  I hope this is just a case of stupid teen rebellion- I wouldn't start gossiping with all the neighbors just yet.  They have to know something is up- pointing it out just makes you look a little nosey neighborish.

Yes, if yours and my math is correct, he was about 16 when this happened...either that or he's older now than what i thought he was!

Agreed...I will keep it to myself, that's for sure! It just makes me uncomfortable with my young son. Thanks!

Well, your son IS your business so you have every right to restrict any interaction between the neighbor kid and your son.

  • Keep it to yourself. Telling other neighbors just makes you a bad neighbor and horrible gossip.  You really can't do anything about it except move if it really bothers you, if you found out that there were people coming to the neighborhood because of him that were breaking into other homes/vandalizing other homes or causing violence to other people then that would be a different story and then you have a reason to call the police to figure out what can be done, but him being a kid that gets himself in trouble with the law is no reason to do anything really.

For certain, he will not be doing any yardwork for us anymore...that is for sure. That's the extent of the 'contact' my son would have with him, if any at all.

  • My next door neighbors had a son with problems.  THe police were in our neighborhood constantly...just checking things out.  It was sorta nice because they were a visible presence. Now that he no longer lives with them there, not so much police presence. I think it was better with him there!!!
