I shouldn't have suggested my doctor to so many people in the early days when she was still accepting new patients. Now she works 3 days a week, and is nearly impossible to see.
I'm sick and called yesterday for an appointment for this and an other concern. She's booked solid for 2 weeks, including her urgent open appointments.
I LOVE her as my doctor, but it's awfully hard being her patient for anything less than a prescheduled routine appointment. I know most of her partners from other appointments that either I or my kids (who share the same doc) have had, and like them enough, but I miss that one on one aspect with my doctor.
Is this typical in modern medicine?
Re: Your doctor
I see this in a lot of doctor offices - I'm lucky with my dr - he can almost always get me in the same day when I'm sick.
I want to refer everyone to him, so they'd have a great dr, but I also don't want to get his name out too much, and his practice get full.
I take treats to his staff when I'm not sick - I don't know if that helps me get worked in or not, but I do it!
I love her too, and honestly, I would've hit the road by now ages ago if I didn't like her so much, because getting in to see her is a major PITA. I too have had appts that needed to be rescheduled, and in some cases when she's canceled or is booked, I've gone to see the other Dr. B (male), and I really like him too. Not sure if I like him enough for OB/GYN, but for basic stuff I have been really comfortable with him. Anyway, I have no idea if this is common with all doc practices. I'm also to the point of "where do I go if I don't see her?" kind of situation. I'm curious about the kind of feedback this thread will generate.
I have an appt with her tomorrow for V. . .at least I think I do. haha.
I'm pretty sure you know my thoughts on this, but I'll say them anyway.
I absolutely love and adore my Dr there.
I never have had any probably getting in to see my Dr B whenever I need to. If it is important, they will squeeze me in. And he has been able to fit my H in last minute too for appt. Only once did I have to go the after hours, and that was b/c it was the weekend and I didn't want to wait till monday.
The only issue I have ever had with that office has been with the office staff and a few of the nurses.
(side note, next week is my last appt with him before I leave. I know I am going to bawl. Thankfully he understands)
As you know, I have the same doctor so I don't have much experience with others.
However, last year I needed an appointment with an OBGYN outside of their network and it took forever to get in to see her, and then they rescheduled me twice (darn women kept going into labor during my appointment times!). I was not happy. I've had much better luck with Dr. B.
So in my very limited experience, unfortunately this seems to be the norm.
I see an integrative medicine DO, so she is always booked way out. She deals mostly with chronic conditions though, after other docs have failed to accomplish anything with typical US medicine methods.
Our copay is now the same for a regular Dr appt as it is for a trip to the Prime care (urgent care) center of the hospital, so if anything immediate comes up that can't wait more than a week, I just go there & then ask them to forward the records to my DO. Although, since beginning alternative treatments I haven't had need for an actual doctor visit in at least a couple of years, other than for my annual girly check.
Our doctor gets us in pretty much every time we call, especially if it's a big deal (i.e. woke up with horrible sore throat, big huge rash everywhere, etc.). I actually called at 5:30 today and got an appt for 10:30 tomorrow morning. I ADORE my doctor.
That said, he has closed his practice and hired a PA, so it could be because there is another person on duty. He always squeezed us in before, though. I think a part-time doc would be a deal breaker for me, especially with Mere.
Not the norm for me, but it is for DH. I see a Metro Health doc, whom I adore, and who always gets me in same-day for sick calls. Sometimes I see a PA, which is completely fine by me for things like sinus infections/ear infections, but more often than not, I see my own doc.
DH called his, an MMPC doc, for a sick appointment last year and the soonest they could see him was two WEEKS from then. Unacceptable, IMO. I've been trying to get him to switch to mine.

Yup and yup. I was a little nervous for my 1st ob/gyn appt with him, but I didn't need to be. I am really sad that he isn't going to be the one to deliver my baby now.
