Nervous about Job interview

I decided on Monday to start looking for a job and I got a call today!  Yeah, didn't expect it to happen so fast.  I interview Friday.  It's been 9 years since I've been on a job interview!  AGH!

I don't even own a suit; I donated all of mine because it had been years since I'd worn one of them.  Guess I'm going shopping tomorrow.  I am a nervous wreck.  Any tips or advise you can give me?

 TIA

Re: Nervous about Job interview

  • I think interview styles have changed in teh last few years.  Be prepared for behavioral/situational types of questions.  Ex - Give me an example of a time when X situation presented itself and how you reacted.  OR - If X situation happened, how would you handle it?  Google "interview questions" and practice.  Plan to get there early, but don't check in until about 5-10 minutes before you're scheduled... any earlier is kind of annoying to the hiring managers.  If it is in the afternoon, take the whole day off work... no sense in being stressed or rushed going into the interview.  RELAX and be yourself.  Most importantly, remember that you're interviewing them too.  This is your life and you have to choose the right path -- ask questions that will tell you about their culture, etc.  Make sure it is right for you as well.

  • Great advice! Don't forget to come up with 3 reasons why they should hire you, give only a salary range if they ask and make sure you have contact info for your references! Good luck.

  • Google common interview questions and answers and be prepared with answers to questions.

Don't be afraid to say "I don't know" or ask for clarification

Take extra copies of your resume just in case

Research the company as much as you can

Have questions to ask the interviewers

At the beginning of the interview, get the person's business card or contact info so you can send TYs

At the end of the interview, ask about next steps and timing so you don't have to guess when you'll hear from them or post here asking if/when you should follow up

  • All the ladies gave great advice. It's important to be prepared for the nightmare questions. For example:

    1) What is your greatest weakness?

    2)  Why should we hire you?

Best of luck with the interview!

  • I'm interviewing for jobs right now and when they ask you the dreaded "what would you say is a weakness of your's?" Make sure that you take something and put a positive spin on it. For example: If you only have a little bit of experience in one of the job responsibilities say "Well, I have experience in writing PR (for example), but I would like to work on my skills more so that I feel more comfortable with it. I feel confident that I can write any kind of PR, but I'm excited for the opportunity to learn more and hone my skills so that I can feel even more confident in my writing."

Then it isn't as scary of a question. Big Smile

    Good luck in your interview!
