moms - potty training help

So, R will stay dry ALL day.  he'll tell us when he needs to go, he'll tell the sitter when he needs to go, he is usually dry after nap and sometimes even in the morning.  This is all great....except he won't poop on the potty :(

Poor thing didn't go at all yeserday and his belly was hurting today.  He finally went (3 times now)...but each time was in his pull up.  We try to tell him to go on the potty, but he said that pee is for potty's.

Any tips on getting my little guy to go #2 on the potty??

Re: moms - potty training help

  •  How old is he? I have no advice on this one.
  • He's just over 2.5  (will be 3 in early July).

I wasn't going to push the potty thing until summer since we're having baby #2 within the next few weeks...but he took an interest in the potty and we went with it because he did so well.

  • I know its not a great tip, but I would just try to catch him in the act and then move him to the potty. My son would go into the other room so to go poo, so I would hurry up and catch him when I seen him headed that way and put him on the potty.

  • bribe him?  our sticker chart had a 4 catagories...sitting on the potty, #1, #2, accident/pull up free day.  If he had a stellar day we rewarded him by letting him choose his own character undies...we even got to the point where he "earned" one pair of underware for a good day/experience.  This helped a ton with public pottying for us.  HTH.

  • I was going to say, I am no where near potty training J2 but I wouldnt hesitate using a small bribe...for something immediately gratifying (maybe stock up on some tokens to collect and turn in for a toy later or something along those lines) GL I hope you find something out that works for you!

  • He gets 2 smarties for going pee on the potty.  We're trying to tell him he'll get MORE smarties for going poop, but that's not working.

I'm thinking a sticker chart or something...maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

I liked PP's idea of letting him pick the cool underwear or something.  Seems practical, and that way I'm not buying a bunch of crappy toys!

  • I switched right to underwear when he started staying dry overnight.  no pullups, and no potty chair either, he wanted to use the big potty right away.  he hated the feeling of poop in his pants and I just kept reminding him it wouldn't be that way if he "put his poop in the potty, not in his pants!"  I got him all excited about it and asked him every half hour if he wanted to put some poop in the potty lol.  sounds weird but it worked when he thought about it that way, and he caught on in a weekend.

Haleigh helped too, she told him he was going to big-kid school and they only wear underwear and put all their poops and pees in potties lol.  that got him all excited to be a big boy.  good luck!

  • I just went through this a couple months ago with Ava....she would do great peeing on the potty but not pooping, she would literally ask for a pullup and then go behind the TV and poop!!!! I don't know what it is....we just kept working with her and working with her, and now she does great and has been for the last 2 months! We would reward her too....if she peed she got 1 jellybean, but if she pooped she got 4!!! We would make the poop more exciting.....Bribing really worked for us....good luck, He will get it!
  • also discussing that babies use diapers and big boys use the potty might help him transition to the potty full and with the new baby. Alex is all about being a big boy and Cameron is the one who gets bottles, diapers, a crib, and a pacifier.
